Hi - I'm looking for Hutton family information from Hollis, York County, Maine USA. Sarah Hutton, born about 1769, married Samuel Bradbury. They had seven children and I believe they stayed in that area. I haven't found any leads for Sarah's family. Thanks so much - Sue suemanz.graham@comcast.net

I continue my search for the parents of Susanna (Susannah) Hopkinson who married William Bradbury 19 May 1765 in Buxton, York County, Maine. Susanna and William had a son, Samuel who married Sarah Hutton. Their son, Simeon married Annie Googins and their daughter, Frances Elizabeth Bradbury was my 3rd great grandmother. Any suggestions would be most appreciated! Thank you - Sue suemanz.graham@comcast.net

Hi Dixie, I believe we are cousins. Alice Helen Randall was my great-aunt. Webster Randall, Alice's brother, was my grandfather. I grew up in Kittery Point and we always called her Aunt Betty. Are you able to see my family tree on Ancestry? I'm currently living in St. Louis but all the rest of my family still lives in the same area back home. I've been working on both sides of my family tree (Randall and Seaward) for a couple of years and signing up for Ancestrys seemed the best way to go because of all the records it pulls in from many sources and the ability to have information out there for other family members to make contact. Let me know which child of Alice's and Wilbur's you are related to. Do you have an Ancestry family site that you're working on? I have Alice and Wilbur's children listed but didn't have information any farther than that. I vaguely remember Sue and Danny Higgins growing up. I was born in 1948 and of course we lived just down the road from the Higgins house. Great to hear from you - Helen

Hi Helen - I think I'm related to you through my grandmother Alice Helen Randall Higgins. It was great to find her lineage back to 1850. I was wondering if there's a lineage from there to back Benjamin Randall, 1749-1808, born in New Castle, NH and died in New Durham, NH. (Founder of the Freewill Baptist Church) Thanks for any help you or others may have! Dixie

Thanks both of you, I appreciate it.

Yes, the military information for James Robert is correct. I tracked him and his career and found the veteran's home where he died.

The birth record for any of Florence's children (Effie to William Adams, and three boys to James Lowrie) still elude me. And the marriage records for both marriages as well.

NH's vital records for this time are incomplete; I think my only hope may be a lucky find of church records. Florence's second husband James Lowrie I can track to when he came over from Scotland. William Adams is a ghost for me. All I know is his name from his daughters marriage license. He died sometime between 1870 and 1877, when his wife is definitely remarried and William likely married Florence sometime around 1870/1869, probably in New Hampshire.
Samuel Shackford is buried in a small family cemetery on what is now called the New Dam Rd. in Sanford. It was known as Mouse Lane many years ago.

His gravestone is worn and damaged to the point that it is unreadable. Over the past several years, I have been making sure a flag is placed on his grave.

His wife, Charity (d: Sept 3, 1842 AE: 65y 7m 13d) is buried there, as well.

The only other grave in the cemetery is Mehitable Shackford, wife of Christopher Shackford. She died on April 20, 1852, AE: 44y.

According to "Early Families of Sanford-Springvale, Maine" by Frederick R. Boyle, Samuel was born in 1761 (he makes reference to "Maine Soldiers" p. 703) and served in the Revolution from Wells, ME. He died in 1844.

Apparently, Samuel Shackford had a wife prior to Charity. She was Eunice Day, a daughter of Hilton Day of Wells, ME. Several Days settled on what is now the New Dam Rd, as well.

The cemetery is near the road and is surrounded by a white, wooden fence. It is immediately south of Lavalley Lumber.

I hope this information helps.

John White,

Springvale, ME

Re: SHAPLEIGH VETERAN - JOHN DARLING HUNTRESS

The soldier named John Huntress, who had served in the 2nd Massachusetts Infantry, in fact collected a pension from the U.S. government, and died there. At no time did he have anything to do with Australia. All such data is shown in documentation, and is freely available to those who do the proper and thorough research. The person named John Darling Huntress, buried in Australia, is known to have served under a different name altogether. A small group of very efficient researchers, and who previously included the late Roy Parker of Sydney, have collected all details on all of these veterans, and even others whose names are kept under wraps, for very obvious reasons. We have been constantly collecting all such data since the mid-1980's, and much of this data is not shown online, or in publications. We have never, I repeat, never stopped collecting such data, and have continued our research since we started.
Also, I need to stress one point which is often wrongly shown by those who did not know the late Roy Parker, namely that Mr. Parker was a thorough gentleman, who was very humble to all and sundry. He was very well respected, and his funeral, in 1998, was well attended, to the point that the chapel was overflowing. However, as the late Mr. Parker himself had so often admitted, he was certainly NOT the first to research the veterans buried in Australia and New Zealand, and did not have a vast knowledge of the American Civil War. He often relied on others, especially Mr. Len Traynor, for any details he wished to clarify.
When he was alive, I often spoke to Mr. Parker, on the phone, or in person, and he even treated me as an equal, despite my background. I had, and still have, a very high respect for this gentleman amongst gentlemen.

Thank you Lisa. I hadn't thought about the fact that he may be buried in some small graveyard. I knew about the Maine Old Cemetery Association, but I was hoping for a photo of the gravestone if there is one. But, obviously it would help if I could locate where he was buried first (then maybe I can find someone to take a picture). I will contact the Buxton-Hollis Historical Society to see if they have anything. William Johnson was a Rev. War pensioner, but is not listed as far as I can tell in any listing of graves of Rev. War soldiers...which may mean that his grave is either 1) in a very small, private cemetery as you suggested, or 2) in an un-marked grave, meaning I can not locate it.

Thanks again.

Hi Madeline,
I would suggest trying to find the following book in a library near you or through inter library loan (purchase would be expensive, I think):
Maine cemetery inscriptions. York County
Author: Maine Old Cemetery Association.
Publisher: Camden, Me. : Picton Press, ©1995.
Series: Maine Old Cemetery Association special publication, no. 1

This book series is a really great resource; it helped me find a tiny little burial ground off Rte. 112 in Buxton in the back corner of a private farm.

The area of Maine you are searching in for burials in that time frame could make your search more difficult. From experience I have learned that many burials took place on small family plots and in some cases private land, and have become overgrown with trees and in some cases the little cemeteries are almost completely hidden by forest. Not to say it's impossible to find a grave there, but the locals might be the best way to go...
You could try writing to or calling:
Buxton - Hollis Historical Society
Box 34, Buxton, ME 04093
(207) 727-3131‎

They are probably open more often in summer than other months; and weekends more so than weekdays.
There is also a Limington Historical Society:
http://www.limingtonhistory.org/

If your ancestor was a Rev. War pensioner, there may be further information on him withing their holdings at Limington His. Soc.

Good luck,
Lisa

William Johnson was a Revolutionary War pensioner, and came from Limington sometime previous to June 1820 when he made a declaration for his pension at Hollis. I would be willing to pay someone to look for his gravesite and that of Desire Johnson, and to provide a photo if possible.

I'm searching for information on William Adams. In May 1871, he and his wife Florence MACDONALD (25 Aug 1847 - 22 Jan 1890) an immigrant from PEI, Canada had a daughter named Effie. In 1880, Florence is already remarried to her second husband, James LOWRIE (Lowery) with a 3 year old having been widowed.

So all I know about William Adams is that he dies somewhere between 1870 and 1877, and he had a daughter Effie in 1871.

Effie's birthplace on her marriage license is Portsmouth, NH. In 1880 they are living in Kittery, ME. (The Portsmouth naval yard is in Kittery, James LOWRIE was a marine.)

I'm looking for any information and documentation for William Adams, so far I've tracked a lot of dead ends. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I have a small mystery I'm trying to solve about an ancestor: I have information that says he was from Maine, his last name is LITTLEFIELD, he was 16 when he fought at the battle of Bunker Hill (June 1775.) He also took part in the battles of Ticonderoga, Bemis Heights, Crown Point, and Plattsburg. He also took part in the War of 1812. He had a daughter named Betsy, who was born in Maine in 1788, (and married a man named Aurin Z. LITTLEFIELD, who was a poor boy in his youth, who became a well-to-do man in his later years, and at some point hauled produce on a hand-sled from the Kennebec River to Montreal, Canada.) There were many LITTLEFIELDS who fought in the Revolutionary war, but I have a short list of militiamen for the War of 1812 with the last name LITTLEFIELD. They are: Ephraim, Ivory, Laphael, and Story, all privates. There is an Ephraim in the LDS database b. in York, ME abt 1761, who m. a Lydia PERKINS on 9 Oct, 1779 in Wells, York, ME. I don't know if they are the same Ephraim LITTLEFIELD, or not. And I don't know if that is the LITTLEFIELD I am looking for. Can anyone help me?

Thanks in advance!

I understand that there is a plaque on the southeast side of Witchtrot Road in South Berwick, Maine that marks the site of the original homestead of immigrant ancestor, Nathan Lord. It was occupied by the Lords until about 1755, when it came into the possession of Wallingford/Goodwin families. The house burned in 1910. Does anyone have photos of the house before it burned down that they could share with me?
Jean

Original homestead in Eliot, Maine of William Furbush

I've read in various sources where the original homestead of immigrant ancestor, William Furbush, was located in terms of the old days. Can anyone tell me how to find the location of the site in Eliot using present day markers? I have read that his original homestead was at Furbish Hill in Eliot, Maine in the NW corner of present day, Eliot. He lived near Thompson's Point and his tract of land was 40 rods wide running from the river back one full mile or 80 acres in all. His house was in the middle of his land or about 40 rods from the river where the marks of the old cellar could still be seen in the 1890's. When William Furbush died, his son, Daniel Furbush, lived his life out there, with his wife, Dorothy Pray.
Can anyone give me the exact location of the site of the original William Furbush homestead in Eliot, Maine, using present day markers?
Jean.

Bethany Thompson 1791 & Joseph Drew 1788/1792 - Parents?

Who were Joseph Drew's parents?

He married 2 Apr 1812 Bethany Thompson, dau. of Robert Thompson and Hannah Berry. Bethany died before 1850. They had 5 children that I know of: Sarah, Gamaliel S., Hannah, Mary & Louisa who both died young. Ruth Ayer gives Joseph's birth as 20 May 1788, but the censuses below show 1792 and 1790. Newfield Vital Records shows him as Joseph Drew 2nd on birth records of children. This could mean his father was Joseph or he is the 2nd Joseph in the area. Ayer suggests he was the son of Robert Drew of Loudon, or of Samuel Drew of Loudon.

Joseph Drew b. 1792,is in 1850 census in October in Portland, ME living with his son Gamaliel, both are Coopers. 1860 census Joseph b. 1790 ME is also living with son Gamaliel.

But, same 1860 census dated October in Portland, shows Joseph Drew b 1792 ME and wife Sarah. He is also a Cooper by trade.

*Joseph Drew b abt 1786? prob. Cumberland, ME. son of Hezekiah Drew & Esther Ross - both in Phillipsburg, York ME census in 1810. Could this be him?

*Joseph Drew b abt 1801 b. Coxhall, ME 1st wife Abigail Smith 2nd Amelia Werden. His parents Elijah Drew & Elizabeth Holmes.

*Joseph Drew b. 1807 Newfield, wife Charlotte McKusick, son of Joseph Drew & Eliza Shaw.

The above are the Joseph Drews b. Maine, there are others b. NH near same age, some who lived in Maine:
*Joseph b. abt 1795 Gilmanton, son of Theophilus Drew.
*Joseph b abt 1798 NH, wife Rhoda b abt 1808 ME, in 1850 Berwick, ME census.
*Joseph b. ?, who inherited land in Madbury, per the will in 1804 of David Drew b. abt 1725 to his grandson, with no father named.

Any suggestions, information, elimination of any of these, or corrections are welcome.
