OK, now the story about the cabin makes sense. Somewhere I have Verna Mae's book and I remember there were many references to the Hindman school. It was certainly an important part of their lives.

I'm not sure what documents I have that would be helpful. I do have death certificates for Milton,Lucinda and Vincent.
Little Granny was my husband's 5th great grandmother.

Chris

Hi; What I am calling to "Vince Owens cabin" is the cabin donated by Verna Mae Slone. I've not seen it 'in situ', only from some wonderful photos recently emailed to me by the photographer, Jeri Henderson. The cabin dates back to early Caney Creek days; I believe it is the one she writes about in "What My Herat Wants to Tell", and I think Vince may have lived in it during his last years. I think it was built by one of her Slone ancestors (possibly one of Little Granny's sons.)
Vince's son, Milton Owens, is my greatgrandfather. Three of Milton's sons are still alive, but we tend to run toward girls in my generation...all that coffee drinking, I guess. Only two out of my six male 1st-cousins are in the male line, but I'm going to see if I can talk one of them into participating. (Maybe if I offer to pay....)
For whatever reason, there is an error when I try to see my old post so I only have a general idea of what I posted : (

I am pretty familiar with the Owens DNA site. It has created as more mysteries than it solved. But that's part of the charm of family history : ) More males descendants need to be tested to untangle the history!

I have little doubt that the Owens children who were indentured were all related. DNA results indicate they were not siblings. One possibility is male heirs related through maternal Owens lines (cousins?). For instance "double Owens" - two Owens lines marrying as is recorded more than once - and the descendant being tested has a maternal Owens link to this family. Adoption, formal or informal, or a son carrying his mother's maiden name.

From "implied" marriages, mostly land documents, it appears that William Owens did marry a Lea/Lee - Frances (Lea)Whitely at about the time he told the court he was able to again care for his 2 children. They moved to KY and had children - sometimes attributed to Reese. If we rely on the documentation, it appears unlikely that there was a Jenny/Virginia Lea/Lea marriage to Reese. Reese probably was not married to his first wife & she may well have been an Indian woman.

My husband grew up in Knott Co. and we have both visited the settlement school (Hindman) but we are unaware of a cabin known as the Vince Owens cabin. ?

I would gladly share any info that we have collected.

Chris

My grandmother (Frances Reynolds) was a school teacher in Knott and Floyd Co.'s before she married my grandfather Elisha H. Owens @1919, and also after she was widowed in 1936. Her sister, Lottie Reynolds (m Talbee McGuire after 1920), was also a teacher in Floyd Co. until she died in 1944 after being killed while trying to catch a train in Prestonsburg. I'm trying to locate school records for teachers hired @1910-1945 in the Knott Co. area. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

hi Chris. I have many of the same questions. Have you seen the "Owens DNA site", where the question of Reese and William is currently being addresed? The web site shows an old photo of the Dickerson Co., VA 'homeplace' with a cabin that is almost identical to the 'Vince owens cabin' at the Hindman school.

Kimberly Owens

Hi - My grandmother is/was Bertha Cline dob 1887- my father, Charles A. Oelze told me that Bertha was taken in to live with Claib about the age of 12 (about 1899) - supposedly she is buried in the same cemetery - she died early approx 1913. I have searched and searched for any records regarding Bertha - all I have are the family stories told to me. My email is lndsnd@aol.com Thank you for any info you may have! -Linda

Thank you for writing. looking at your line I think we maybe connected. I started research on ancestry about 3 months ago. I found an old post from Martha Cronwell, November 28, 2001. This post really hit target and maybe connected with your line. I have attempted to contact her but, no response. It's been a lot of years since her post and may no longer be an active ancestry.com. Find her post I think you may find it helpfull. John Decker is the son of Rev. War Vet George W. Decker from New York. He ended up in Wayne Co. Ky. District, Walnut Bottom. Please share any information on the Decker line you find in you travels. I am looking for my grandfathers wife's line. Sarah H Ashley. I can't find a think. If you see anything please tell me.
I'm not sure about this but I am willing to compare notes with you. My Deckers start with John Decker 1790 either born in Pa. or NY. the states were not really states before this so it is only a guess. I have two sons Elisha and ELias who were born in Ohio and migrated after their marriages to two Cornwell sisters, and several children a piece to Iowa in and aroudn the Sigourney area. I have their children one of which was my ggrandmother from Elisha Decker and Mary Polly Cornwell. I am having a very difficult time fidning anything other than their names and birth years on the brother's children.
Carrie

I to have been searching for Jordan's grave site. Hopefully, finding Barbara beside him. So far, the best guess is a Cemetery on or near Quillen Chapel Road, Campton, Ky. I have driven along Rt 15 through Campton and that road intersects with RT 15. This road is very near Swift Creek Road. Which matches family tradition that they are buried in Swift Camp Cemetery. Seach has been made of the Cemetery on Quillen Chapel road, but no Jordan or Barbara. There are graves with stones no longer readable. I descend from their daughter Martha. Would like to further discuss this family. jbfrancis6@aol.com

Anyway he was first married to Cora Harless. I'm curious why that ended? His parents were Joseph Clark Shannon and Rebecca Jane Birchfield. He died in Kentucky. Any stories or info on the guy and his life would be very much appreciated. I found his gravesite this week as I was in the area visiting, so that was exciting. Thank you!

Here is Census Record Letcher Co., Ky which was the county from which Pine Top, Ky would have been enumerated in 1860/70/80. This is the 1880 Letcher Census House Hold # 340/340 Smith, William B age 28, Nancy age 22, Jasper N age 3, Joseph age 1, and Elizabeth Dials age 55. Hope this helps.
JB Francis

Thanks for posting that, Connie.

Vinie's death cert says her mother's maiden name was Tilda Delphia!

I was also told that Isaac was married twice. Could be confusion over similar names or because the 1910 census Knott Co. has Isaac, Matilda & a grandson listed - 2nd marriage for Isaac, 1st for Matilda.

1870, if his parents were Caleb & Sally - I found him with them. 1880 next door to Caleb & Sally with wife Matilda and several children, age 6 & younger, including Vinie. 1900 census says they were married 24 yrs.

Chris
Isaac Hicks was born in 1846 and had a daughter Vina. You are probably right in your assumption about his wife being between the two graves. His wife's name was Matilda Duff.

William Hicks was my grandfather (my mother is Elizabeth) and Fair Hicks was his brother. Fair first married Lulie Sparkman, then married Hazel Bolin. His brother Elder Hicks married Lulie's sister, Myrtie. I am doing some research on the Hicks generation also.
