Due to the recent death of my Aunt, I have some school pictures that belonged to my Grandfather, Robert Edward Burnett. Mr Burnett was headmaster of various schools in Laurel and Knox counties. Many are too wrecked to be able to see. One in particular is pretty good and it is taken in front of the schoolhouse (very poor looking school house), lots of kids, all barefoot. If anyone thinks they may be able to tell me where it was taken or would like a copy, let me know. I am attaching the picture.

Thanks LaVerne, for giving me a chance to reply with some dates.

If you like to read romantic novels you'll find this novel a fun read.

"The Winthrop Woman" by Anya Seton (It's about our Eli Tompkins' ancestor Elizabeth Fones Winthrop Feake Hallett)

THE PURITAN LEGACY IN AMERICA...,
By Lawyeraau (Balmoral Castle) -

This review is from: The Winthrop Woman

This is a dazzling work of historical fiction that I first read as a young adult. Now, over thirty years after first reading it, I find that time has not diminished the power and passion of this exquisitely written work of historical fiction. At the heart of this fine novel, is Elizabeth Fones, an Englishwoman who would marry her first cousin, Harry Winthrop, and would go on to lead a life of which few of us would dream.

As a member of the austerely Puritan Winthrop family, Elizabeth would chafe under its restrictive influences. When the family fortunes abated in England due to the religious beliefs of the family patriarch, John Winthrop, Elizabeth's uncle and father-in-law, the entire family sets off for the New World to become founding members of the Massachusetts Bay colony, a theocracy under which Elizabeth was to know much heartache.

A passionate and vibrant woman, Elizabeth would have a number of personal situations that would cause her to become notorious amongst the Puritan colonists. She would be both reviled and admired for her actions, which were singular for those times. This is an absorbing, page turner of a book that takes a look at sixteenth century England during the tumultuous time that preceded the civil war that would see an act of regicide and the rise of Puritan Oliver Cromwell. It also relates the turmoil that underlay the government of the nascent Massachusetts Bay colony with all its factionalism, restrictive practices, and bigotry.

The novel, set against a historical backdrop filled with well known personages of the time, both English and Dutch, lovingly chronicles and explores Elizabeth's passage in life as a member of the illustrious Winthrop family, her troubled marriages, her relationship with the Siwanot Indians, and the trials and tribulations that she underwent as a compassionate, independent woman in a time when to be such was to destine oneself to become a pariah within the larger community.

This is a historical novel that is epic in its telling, beautifully written, and one to be savored until the very last page is turned. Bravo!

http://otal.umd.edu/~walt/gen/htmfile/1182.htm

Another book but a true story is about Eli's Cornell ancestors "Killed Strangely (The Death of Rebecca Cornell) by Elaine Forman Crane.

See Ken Hinds Genealogy to get your lineage back to Rebecca Cornell. http://hindskw.cts.com/KennethHinds/2742.html

Jim (drew2020@aol.com)

shelley,
I know you have fleshed out the William and Mary Jones line since 2001. I saw it linked to the Cobb-Sasser webpage several years ago. it is no longer linked--in the process of bringing it back. I am a daughter of John B Jones and knew my aunts and uncles: Berda, Winnie (lived with them as a child), Fred, and Guy. One of their siblings you did not mention and whom I did not personally meet, but heard about is South Jones. If I have it correct, they were children of William Franklin Jones and Polly Hensley who was his second wife. I met Pete whom I remember as an uncle to those siblings (I could be wrong, that was when I was 7 or 8 years old.
I am here and have cousins in Laurel Co. and will go hunting for info, if you need it.

I am sorry I do not know anything further about connections. However, in 2002 or 3 I was in London visiting a Rush relative and was told that there were related Cheeks still in the area--around Burnside, I believe--at least somewhere along Hwy 25--may have been Pittsburg community. I know there are connections, but the Petree clan has been quite elusive. Hope this at least gives you some hope that there are connections still living in the area

It has been so long, you may no longer check for an answer regarding your Burnett family---I do not live in Laurel Co. now, but did at one time. Your great uncle Virgil was known as Whitey Burnett. He lived in Hammond, Indiana, and died in Black Oak, Indiana, i believe, at least when knew of his whereabouts in the 1980's that is where he was. He married twice and had at least 2 girls by his first wife (I do not know who she was.) His second wife was named Georgia.
She was by his side for years as he suffered from alzheimer disease. Whitey was in some related to my Jones family. I believe through Rebecca Jones. I would love to see the picture you have and see if I can identify Whitey for you.

Sue C. Jones

Jim,

Just read the lineage you posted and wondered how you're so sure Benjamin Tompkins and "Polly" Elizabeth Hampton are the parents of Eli Tompkins? I know a lot of people believe this, but I've never seen any proof. Do you perhaps have a will or something I've missed in my search for his parents? I'm related through the line of Eli Tompkins & Mary Jane Godsey and would be thrilled to find docs on Eli's parents.

Thanks so much, LaVerne

Dorothy I have been researching Henson's for about 8 years now what a tangled mess. I have a William C Henson born 1821 in Vanderburgh Co Indiana with a brother John C born 1822 same. They both went from there to Wayne co Illinois then to Civil war then to MO. Have followed them through all census record from 1850-1880 they stay with the Chapmans, Burketts slovers. They are always with Phillip Henson family married to Matilda McKinny and John C Henson married to Jane Goodbread. Cannot connect their parents. Have Henson Cemetery in Orchardville and site of Fayeshane but they are not in there. William C married Isabel Slover then Mary Dale Kiser. John C married Clarinda Wilson. My g grandfather was Noah Austin born MO 1871 son Lewis Lee, my father Lewie Delmar Henson. They seem to attach to the Hensons from NC, KY, IN IL MO. If you have any information would love it Thank You I do have 3 brothers we could do DNA
Mary Henson

Aaron Johnson was my GGGGGrandfather, his son William B. was my GGGGrandfather, Williams' son Reuben Daniel was my GGGrandfather and Reubens daughter Rachel was my GGrandmother. I have information on Aaron moreso than his brother William. William was born abt. 1785 in Middlefork, Saluda River, Greeneville, SC. His wife was Bartheny Young. They were married abt. 1805 in Greeneville, SC. I believe they had five children:
John, b. 1807 in SC
Susannah, b. 1812 in SC
Sion, b. 1815 in SC
William, b. 1819 in SC
Hiram, b. 01/20/1827 in Ky.
You might post on Saluda Co. SC and Greeneville Co. SC boards and find more info on William.
I am not certain about William or Joseph, but Aaron was in the 5th Reg. Keith's SC Militia, Capt. Cartey's Co. SC State troops. He first appears on the 1820 census in Knox Co. Then in Laurel Co. 1830, 1840, and 1850. Next Appears on 1860 census.

This census is one of the three for which the original data is no longer available. Almost all the population schedules were damaged in a fire in 1921, with 25% destroyed and 50% damaged by smoke and water damage. The damage to the records led to an outcry for a permanent National Archives. In December 1932, according to standard Federal record keeping procedure at the time, the Chief Clerk of the Bureau of the Census sent the Librarian of Congress a list of papers to be destroyed, including the original 1890 census schedules. The Librarian was asked by the Bureau to identify any records which should be retained for historical purposes but the Librarian did not accept the census records. Congress authorized destruction of that list of records on February 21, 1933 and thus the 1890 census remains were destroyed by government order by 1934 or 1935. The other censuses that have lost almost all information were the 1800 and 1810 enumerations

There is a William Brumit in the household of Benjamin Hawkins Brumit in the 1850 Owsley Co Ky Census born about 1834. This William is also in the 1860 Jackson Co Ky census wife Cintha, children Benjamin born ca. 1856, Samual ca. 1857,Elander ca. 1859, Susan P. 1860. jibrumit@aol.com says that this William married Cintha Parker.
