Federal Censuses for Indiana

For those who have not already discovered the site, there are free census transcriptions for Indiana counties at www.us-census.org/states/indiana.

These transcriptions are very useful to researchers who do not have access to images. They can also be useful to researchers who do have access to images because in many cases, they are prepared by people do research in the areas they are transcribing, and they are able to provide a more accurate index of names.

These transcriptions have been done by volunteers who work for free and provide their work at no charge, and the number of transcriptions available depends upon the number of volunteers willing to do the work. Because of this, only one census year is available for Parke County.

If you do research in Indiana, be sure to check and see if there are transcriptions available for the areas you are researching. Also, PLEASE consider volunteering to do a transcription, even if it's only one township. Your work can help hundreds, if not thousands, of your fellow researchers.
We bought a house in Tangier that was on land that was owned by the Richardson's. Info that I have found is sketchy, but I do know this. We found receipts from J.A. Richardson Implement Co. from 1899. (James A.) He sold horse drawn implements. His son Roy took over the business after he passed away. His daughter Hollis, left a letter in our house from a friend. I am slowly trying to find out more about our house, but that is a little info. It sounds to me as if they were doing well for the area at the time. I believe Hollis married Henry Watson October 22, 1913. I believe your post has been the most helpful thing that I have found.

So there seem to be 2 Elna M. Marlar's in Parke County since Elna M. is also shown with her grandparents, David D. and Letitia Martin, in the 1900 census for Parke County with a birthdate of Feb 1891.

Not sure if this is Thomas C. Overpeck but found this info for you:

INGenWeb - Parke County - Memory Gardens Cemetery
Adams Twp. - Section 6
Surnames I-P

Name: Overpeck, T. Clee
Born: 1885
Died: 1968

Thomas C. Overpeck if listed with his parents Isaac and Nancy in the 1900 Adams Co., IN census

"Clee" Overpeck is found working as a hired man for the John Perrin family in the 1910 Raccoon Twp., Parke Co., IN

In 1920 T.C. Overpeck and his wife Elna are living in Union Twp., Parke Co., IN. Living with them is a niece, Fannie Martin.

In 1930 Clee Overpeck is listed as the head of household, widowed, in Adams Twp., Parke Co., IN with his sister Maggie and niece Fauniel Martin.
***********************************************************
There is an obit in the Republican newspaper, dated Sep 5, 1968, page 8, for a Clee Overpeck. I just wonder if he went by his middle name Cleveland, nicknamed Clee? Alson an obit is listed in the Tribune newspaper, dated Sep 5, 1968, page 1, for a Thomas Clee Overpeck.

Looking into his wife's obit, I found some info that points to Clee being Thomas Cleveland Overpeck. An obit for Mrs. Clee (Elna M.) Overpeck found in the Republican & the Tribune newspapers. The Republican was dated Dec 19, 1923, pg 8 and the Tribune was dated Dec 19 & 23, 1923, pgs. 1 & 2

I hope this helps.......................Karen

Information I have has some similar names but doesn't match exactly with what you have. Here is what I have from the book,The Family of John Martin and Margaret Faris of Spartanburg County, South Carolina.
Everett, Delbert O. and Elna Marlar are the children of Frank Marlar and Mary Barthain Martin. Mary is the daughter of Letitia Harney and David Daulton Martin.
In the 1900 census, Everett, Delbert O. and Elna are living in Union Twp., Parke County, Indiana with their grandparents, David D. and Letitia Martin. The Martin book says that Mary died July, 1898 and Frank Marlar in 1898. Mary's birtdate is 17 May 1866. She was married briefly to Owen Sutherland in 1885 before her marriage to Frank Marlar in aout 1898.
According to the Martin book, Everett is buried in the Memory Garden cemetery in Rockville, IN. Have you checked the RootsWeb Parke County website for possible burial records for these people?

My Skeeters lineage goes through Parke County, IN. My ggg grandfather James Skeeters was in the county in the 1830, 1840, and 1850 census. A David Skeeters, of the same generation, was there also. In the 1860 census, David and James were in Iroquois county Illinois, as were David, DP, Joseph and my gg grandfather Willis Skeeters.

I found the picture of the 1902 Parke County Skeeters reunion and I truly believe a picture of my g grandfather William Skeeters looks so much like the mustachioed gentlemen in the picture.

Any information we can exchange would be great!! I have been to Iroquois County and have pictures of the cemetery where James was buried. I have very little information before the 1830 census other than James served in the War of 1812 and was born in Kentucky.
Hi, Lafayette Parker is my gg grandfather, and I am just starting out my search on my Parker family name. It sounds like there's not much information on the Parker line past William and Mary Polly Rukes Parker. Has anyone found new information that's not easily found on the internet? Any pictures or stories about this side of the family?

Also, are there ever any Parker/Rukes/Esham family reunions in the Rosedale area?

Thanks for any leads,
Whitney

Old Adams Cemetery, 1/2 mile southwest of old Brewer Home, Mercer County, Kentucky are where Samuel and Anne Adams are buried. John Adams (War of 1812) and Mary Evans Adams are buried at Adams Cemetery or Forks By The Creek near Rosedale, Parke, Indiana. They have gravestones. Samuel and Anne Adams do not have existing gravestones. Only about a half dozen stones still are readable at the Old Adams Cemetery in Mercer, Kentucky.

In looking for veteran burials in Parke County, there is the list at the Veteran's office at the CourtHouse plus two separate lists at the library. When comparing them, not all names are found on any list. For yet more information, and especially information based on actual records, check out the Indiana State Archives. They have several resources including an in-house database.

Thanks for the info...I am looking for my gggGrandfather Sylvester Helms--his death certificate notes he was buried there--and I have had info from others that it is noted in the Burial of Veterans there. I understand that most of the markers for the graves are gone. But this is the first info that I have had that he was a veteran in the Civil War.
It would be interesting to us readers if we also knew where you acquired the photos.
I have Barnes "relations" from near Judson also, who were all half-siblings to my great-grandmother Martha Weatherford Rush Strickler. Her widowed mother Eliza Jane White Weatherford married a William W. Barnes, d. 3-10-1894 at age 74 in Judson, IN (Her death certificate spells it Eliza Jane Barns, and she died at age 82 on 4-8-1904 in Judson).
The following Barnes half-sibs to my great grandmother are
from oldest to youngest, John W, George H, Frances T, and Joseph S.

George married Carrie Clark and was a dry goods store owner in Judson, no issue. Later moved to Indy. I have a nice picture of him with my great-grandmother his sister Martha Strickler, as elderly sibs.
Frances married William B Banta. I think John Barnes m. Josephine Armstrong. And Joseph Barnes I believe married Ora B. Hudson.
Most appear to be buried in Bethany Cemetery but some are in Poplar Grove, which is where most all my Newlin and quite a few Hobson Quaker relatives are buried.

I would LOVE to see old photos of these people, as George and Carrie are the ONLY ones I have photos of, to my knowledge. I may have others and just not know who they are!

Sorry, I should have said Martin Nichols Van Fleet's line back to the 1650's. This line goes back through New York. I doubled checked my files and I don't have anything on Burford.

David, you say you have VanFleets' back to the 1650's. Do you have Mary Ann Vanfleet b. April 3, 1807 in New Jersey who married William Burford? Many of their children ended up in Parke County. I would like to know who her ancestors are.
Bob

It sounds like you are on the right track. If you would like more information on Van Fleets back to the 1650's and what I have on Maria Louisa send me an email.

Re: Van Fleet and Smith Families
I have been researching these two lines of my family. I have not been able to go any farther than Maria Smith. Maria and Martens daughter Mary Eudocia Van Fleet Perry is my great great grandmother. As for the Van Fleets I have info after Marten's father Joshua but I am not positive I'm on the right track. If anyone is willing to share information or pictures I would be very greatful.

James Madison Murrow was born in Parke Co. 10-18-1826 and died in Jefferson Co., IA on 4-19-1853. I guess he is in Canfield Cemetery with his father Charles Murrow and a number of other Murrows.

Charles Murrow and his wife Amy Blue were cousins. His Mother, Rebecca Wallingford and Amy Blue's Mother Phoebe Wallingford were sisters. He is buried in Canfield Cemetery in Polk County, Iowa. Charles was a member of the Baptist Church. A History of Des Moines, Iowa for the year 1857 states: "At a public meeting held April 8, 1848, for the purpose of appointing a committee to adjust differences, resolutions adopted were signed by Charles Murrow.". Amy Blue Murrow and her husband Charles resided in Mason County, Kentucky until 1822 when they moved to Parke County, Indiana. They received a Land Patent in Parke Co. on 4-10-1824 (E1/2SE Sect. 20, Twp 16-N Range 6-W for 80 acres). In 1843 they moved to Henry County, Iowa where they resided for one year before moving to Jefferson County, Iowa. In 1846 they obtained a 160 acre homestead in Walnut Township, Polk County, Iowa from the government, moving there in 1847.

I am the 3rd g grandson of David Blue who married Phoebe Wallingford, Rebecca's sister.
