Hi Nina,

Since your post on your Achor ancestors was created so long ago, this may not reach you. If it does, please contact me. Abshaw aka. Abraham Achor was my gr gr great grandfather. Some information about him is posted on my ancestry.com tree (Carroll/Sloan and Mott/Cantrell), but I have come up against a bit of a blank wall in trying to trace him farther back (possibly because I am a bit new to this pursuit). I would love to collaborate with you and other possible members of Abshaw/Abraham's descendants to trace his origins and to find other of his descendants, share photos, etc. Please contact me through ancestry.com or at yuruk@sbcglobal.net.

Thank you.

Diane

For those who have not already discovered the site, there are free census transcriptions for Indiana counties at www.us-census.org/states/indiana.

These transcriptions are very useful to researchers who do not have access to images. They can also be useful to researchers who do have access to images because in many cases, they are prepared by people do research in the areas they are transcribing, and they are able to provide a more accurate index of names.

These transcriptions have been done by volunteers who work for free and provide their work at no charge, and the number of transcriptions available depends upon the number of volunteers willing to do the work. Because of this, only a few census years are available for Daviess County.

If you do research in Indiana, be sure to check and see if there are transcriptions available for the areas you are researching. Also, PLEASE consider volunteering to do a transcription, even if it's only one township. Your work can help hundreds, if not thousands, of your fellow researchers.
Hi: I am looking for information on a Mary Ann Layshot. What I have is a Dora Pierson born 3/12/1885 born IL. Listed on Social Sec. card applaction list Father Lewis Pierson; Mother Mary Ann Layshot. Listed is Franklin Co. Ill. Not sure if Fathers birth place or Dora's birth place. (this is diffrent SS form than I have seen before.)

I can not find Lewis Pierson. The only Layshot is Mary Ann, daughter of Mabee and Rebecca. But there is a marriage to J. J. Clark in 1887.

If you have any information on Dora I can use it. I am working on the line of Dora's husband William Kay, not Pierson or Layshot (Lashot).
Hi, Richard, I have a very faint relationship to the McCracken in Daviess County, and it does not appear I am related to Sara Jane McCracken. However, I was born in Cannelburg, Daviess County, IN and raised in Loogootee, Martin County, IN and my mom and two brother still live there. I go back once or twice a year and have a large amount of family still living/farming in the area. This website may help:http://www.dmrtc.net/~stjlogot/StJohn/Cemetery/L.htm this gets you to the actual page of "L" list in the cemetry of St John's Parish. I did not find you John Lannan with that year of birth however I did find a James born in 1864 and he owned his plot, he also was owner of the grave plot in which you'll find Sarah J Lannan born 1866. It has the rest of the information block. But it gives you a start and you can hopefully right the church to get more information. Or there are a ten Lannan families still living in Loogootee, according to my year old phone directory. I would be glad to past on some numbers and names if you are interested.

Alan, Know only a little information about the "Maryland League" would love to learn more? Joseph Mark Patterson 03 May 1793 born in Springfield, Washington County, Kentucky married Rose Ann B Tewell on 15 Oct 1818 in Washington County, Kentucky. Rose Ann was born 03 Mar 1798 in Springfield, Washington County, Kentucky. My information says they headed form Martin County, Indiana the day after their marriage. They forded the river at Hindston Falls in Martin County and went as far west to a Village called Mount Pleasant, Martin County, Indiana. They homestead 40 acres of land in that section of Martin County. In a few years they moved to Daviess County, just a few miles away, where they took a land grant. Wabash Erie Canan to Joseph Patterson Dated August 1, 1857 deed book K-page 392, section 10, Township 2, Washington, Daviess County, Indiana. One source says in Jan 22, 1962 the children to that union were: Martin, George, Pius, Alexander, Hillery, Charley Who die in his young manhood around eighteen, Ambrose, James, Betsy, Mary, Mahaley and Nancy. The records I have been able to better verify show the children being: Martin 18 Jul 1819 m Rosilla L "Rose" Arvin, William Pius Sr. 1823 m Catherine Malinda Padgett, Hillary 01 Oct 1824 m Nancy Jane Spalding, Elisabeth "Betsy" Sep 1826 m Lawrence Nowlen, George Washington Sr. 22 May 1829 m Mary Ellen Seal, Margaret Mahala 08 Mar 1830 m Thomas H Arvin, Joseph Alexander 1831 m Sarah Elizabeth Summers, James Silas 09 Oct 1834 m Mary Isadoro O'Brien Gates, Mary 1835, Martha Ann 03 Oct 1838, Nancy P 09 Apr 1839 m Simon Wayne Abel. I have more information if this information is what you are looking for. Of Jospeph and Rose Ann's children's line I have that is most complete is Elisabeth "Betsy" Patterson and Lawrence Nowlen as they are my 2nd Great Grandparents. Hope this is helpful.

yes Homer Thomas Raney and Mary Dot (McCord) were my maternal grandparents, born in Martin (and Daviess) County, IN, married in Daviess, and most of their 10 children were born in the Kansas City area. I grew up knowing grandma Raney.

Homer Thomas Raney had 10 siblings, all born in Martin Co, IN area, and many of them stayed in MCI. Lot of tragedies in those families.
Homer Thomas Raney parents were John Raney and Martha (Johnson) buried in St. Martin's Cemetery, Whitfield.
John Raney parents were James Virgil Raney and Mary Helen Holland.
James parents were Jeremiah Riney Raney and Mary Joan (Sheehan Moore) (widow of Alexander Moore) Jeremiah was born in Maryland, married in Washington Co, KY about 1799, most children born in WCK, and they went to MCI about 1818.
Let me know if you are related. I'm looking for other cousins who are descendents of Jeremiah Riney Raney.

Marilyn (Sause Conlon) Gappa
born in Seattle, raised in Kansas City, live in Iowa.
Have visited MCI, WCK, and will go to the MD to KY reunion in MD next summer.
I don't know if I can tie in my mother's g-g-grandmother Elizabeth Raney to the family you have listed. We did not find Elizabeth until much later in our research. Elizabeth's (b. 1760-1769 in Maryland) daughter Rose Ann Tewell was born in Kentucky in 1799. But...you mention Aiden Raney, born in 1911. On August 23, 1928, the Martin County Tribune reported that "Aden Raney" and William Kennedy pulled my mother, Mary Elizabeth Patterson, from White River after she had gone under several times. After discovering Elizabeth Raney as an ancestor, I have often wondered if Aiden was a relative.

This is my family. Charles,b.1921, is my father. There were 2 other children born after Barbara. Lillian Irene and Morris Dale, not sure of dates, but know it was before 1933. Grandpa Jack (Wm. Preston Gabbard) was killed in 1933.
I am told that Fannie was second wife to Jack. Jack had 2
other children with this woman-boy & girl. Wife and girl
died in flu epidemic. Jack, with son Hiram, then married
Fannie.

I said 1817 per the bio, which still may be correct, but the ages WERE listed on the Southerner list dated May 1836 she is noted as 15. So her date of birth may have been closer to 1820/21.

Yes, Mike,

I found a website that was able to find and send me a copy of the Southerner's passenger list which clearly shows Catherine Cunningham and Michael.

Still unsuccessful locating a passenger list for the "Havre" as mentioned in the bio. At this point Mobile, AL is the last place I have Catherine. Does anyone have further info on her, or, is this the first we all knew her name?

I'm guessing born about 1817 per the bio, no ages on the list. I'm also guessing Margaret Coyle, her mom was b. abt 1795. Also, can't remember how, but I saw something that indicates the B. is Bernard and Michael was born in Athlone, Roscommon, Ireland. Working to find Bernard and/or Margaret.

My paternal ancestors and many of Mom's ancestors are buried in Daviess and Martin Co, IN.
Marilyn, this post goes with the last post and the website. It has information about two cemetry, you will be especially interested in St Rose as that has the older information on the Raney's in the Martin County Area. I will post what is written at the head of the webpage. The history of the Catholic Church in Martin County dates back to the year of 1819 when the first Catholics - the O'Briens and Raneys - settled near Mount Pleasant. It is definitely known that in 1837 the visits of the priest were made monthly. Reverend Patrick O'Bryne offered Mass on these occasions in various homes, while taking care of churches in Logansport and Madison.
Saint Rose was attached to Saint Simon's, Washington, as a regular Mission in 1844. In 1848, Father Patrick Murphy, residing at St. Mary's Barr Township, Daviess County, erected a church at Mount Pleasant. A "land craze" had led to the establishment of St. Rose.

The people came from far and near to avail themselves of the farm lands that were being sold at unusually low prices. The poor farm lands were the first cause of the decline of the Parish, and another was the beginning of the construction of the line of Ohio and Mississippi Railroad through Loogootee.

The Parish was finally dissolved in 1857, and the members north of Mount Pleasant were attached to the new Parish at Loogootee, while those living south were attached to the newly established Parish of St. Martin's.

St. John's, Loogootee, became the largest Parish in the county after a very humble beginning in a small room above the Campbell - Breen Store. Mass was offered there in 1857 by a visiting priest from St Mary's, Barr Township, Daviess County, and later in a frame building belonging to a Mr. Gootee.
In 1858, Father John Mougin' who resided at St. Mary's, undertook the building of a church in Loogootee. The work was completed in 1860 and Father Mougin took charge of St. Mary's as a Mission. A one room school was added to the Parish in 1862, and a Rectory built for the priest in 1866. It was not many years until the rapid growth of the town and the increase in the number of Catholics necessitated the needs for larger buildings.

Thus, in 1880, a new church was erected on the present site, and to this original building there have been many additions and numerous improvements.
Marilyn, Just came over more information on the Raneys some of whom I think you are looking for. These are in a grave in Martin County, but my cousins tell me St Rose Church/Cemetry was a bit closer to the Daviess County Line. I just have no recall of where it was. But for the Raney's you know you have in Loogootee, Martin County, Indiana, this site is GreatA Brief Church History

A new school, with two rooms on the first floor and a large auditorium for Parish activities on the second floor, was erected across the street from the present church. The building was destroyed by fire in 1968. In 1969, St John School consolidated with the Loogootee School System after 107 years of operation.

Marilyn, Hi, it has been awhile! Just saw you post and wanted to send this on to you in this post. I will send it by email to you as well. I am in the process of trying to get a copy of St Mary's Swsquicentennial Book to see what other information is in there that may be helpful. Talk later. Marianne Hart Story on Tewells from St Mary's Catholic Church
Added by hartirish_1 on 8 Sep 2009
Originally submitted by hartirish_1 to Hart Family Tree on 7 Sep 2009

St. Mary's Catholic Church Sesquicentennial Book 1834-1984
Charles Tewell, born Oct 25, 1789 in Maryland, was a son of William and Elizabeth Tewell, who came to Washington Co, Kentucky. He was married Sept. 21, 1818 to Sarah Ann Matilda Raney, daughter of Jeremiah Raney and Mary Jane Sheehan Moore. They came to Daviess Co, Indiana shortly after their marriage, along with his brother, John, whose wife was an O'Brien; and his brother-in-law, Joseph Patterson who married his sister, Rosanna Tewell. The Tewells remained in the St. Mary's Church records for many year. The known children of Charles and Sarah were Elizabeth, Jeremiah, Hester, Alexander, Benedict, Greenberry, Morris, Mary G. and Charles, Jr. Sarah has no marker in the St. Mary's cemetery, but the stone for Charles reads "In memory of Charles Tewell, who was born Oct 25, 1789 - Departed This Life Sept 17, 1843.
Contributed by: Shirley Platt
Note: There may be a problem on the bio of Charles Tewell. His father was in KY no later than 1780 - see land grands for western Virginia - and Charles was not born until 1789. Extremely unlikely that he was born in MD. Also, it is believed that he had a wife before Sarah Riney since he is known to have a son born in 1814. Actually it is suspected that William may well have been born in KY himself. There were Tewells there before 1760 - so this is possible.
Contributed by: Jim Tewell

Wonderful help from the genealogical librarians in Washington, Daviess Co!

My recent research trip was a success thanks to the super women at the library who got me on the path! When I got to the courthouse on the other hand, the officials were ineffective. Luckily there was a charming researcher from the area who along with his friend helped with the will boxes and the 12 foot LADDER! And also with lots of information about my THOMPSON family. (My experiences in Mt. Carmel, IL; Princeton, IN; and Vincennes, IN, were also super!) Good librarians; good courthouse officials.

My Andrew Thompson, b 1816 prob.Daviess Co, is the son of Ephraim and Margaret Thompson who came west from Cecil County, Maryland, with the Aikman family. He bought and sold lots of land in the county. Ephraim became a first county commissioner in 1817 and a judge etc. One of his son's John Thompson was evidently helpful at hiding runaway slaves in the underground railroad along with Peter Stephenson. There were numerous Thompson siblings, John and Andrew were two. John's son Ephraim Thompson, b 1834, married Eliza Bruner and along with his brother Joseph E. Thompson became a merchant in the City. Younger Ephraim also went west for the CA gold rush before he married and settled down, and his letters home to his family in Daviess Co have been published in historical journals.

Elizabeth Thompson married Isaac Rogers, Rebecca T. married William Norris, Sarah T. married William C. Westfall, Daniel D. Thompson married Elizabeth Bogard (don't know if all are siblings.) If anyone knows about these families or the Thompsons in Daviess now, I would really like to collaborate!

My Andrew married a girl of French descent (Tougas) in Wabash Co, IL in 1850. He was a gov't contractor: a surveyor and probably died in Minnesota in 1870. There is a family story about him having been a POW in TX (Tyler, Camp Ford?) as a northern spy after he took a shipload of logs to New Orleans. No facts yet.

My email is linda@laffeygroup.com. And I'm having fun now.
