Coal Miner died in accident in Illinois

My cousin was Bud JOHNSON and was killed in a coal mine after 1930. He was born in 1880; he and his parents were born in Georgia. He was single in 1930. I'm looking in this county because his sister, Emma NORWOOD and family were on the 1930 U.S. census in Williamson county and her husband, George was listed as a coal miner. He would have been survived by two brothers in Texas as well as Emma and maybe others. Does anyone have access to a newspaper or obituaries? I just don't have a timeframe.
I looked on the Illinois state index and there is no one listed. Will you help me?

Have you checked with the Williamson County courthouse in Marion, IL. They are pretty good with records and a death cert for gen. purposes is only $2. They are fairly quick as well.

Thank you D. Anderson. I'll try that. I thought I had to have a death date for a search.

I'm sorry, DAndrews, I entered the wrong name. I'm pretty sure the court house won't help me without a date especially since Bud is not on the Illinois state index. Does anyone know of a newspaper in that area in the 1930's that may have printed a story of the accident, maybe Marion or West Frankfort? How about libraries?

Linda,
I don't have any information to help. I am looking for info on a step grandfather who supposedly died in a mining accident sometime bewtween 1880 and 1919. His name was Cave J. Jones. He lived in Herrin IL, supposedly, because the mine was there. Herrin is a city in Williamson County, so you might see about a Herrin publication as well.

Hi:

Do you have any info on a Hollida Jeter who died 15 Dec 1911 at the Peabody No. #3 coalmine in Williamson County, IL. I think the mine was close to Marion, somewhere in the area between Marion, Carbondale, Herrin, and Carterville. I do know that there was an inquest, but no one seems to be able to find any records.

Thank you. Since Bud JOHNSON is a nick name and I have no idea what the given name is, I will have to rely on his birth year for now. He was born about 1881 in Georgia. I need to check to see if any of the 1890 census survived for the state of TEXAS. Does anyone know?

I would be interested in more about CJ Jones. The age doesn't seem right, but maybe it is his son. Anyway, I would like to look at what you have and try to figure it out. Thank you so much.

Source:
1912 Annual Coal Report of the Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals.

from page 405, December 15, 1911, Holiday Jeter, miner, aged 26 years, married, employed in the No.3 mine of the Peabody Coal Company, Marion, was killed by a fall of slate in his room. Upon entering his working place he found that a shot, fired the previous night, was ssstanding "tight", and he started tomine it loose over the top. While so engaged a large piece of slate fell, breaking his neck. He leaves a widow and two children.

Slate is dark shale lying next to the coalbeds. It contains impressions of the plant life of distant ages, proving the vegetable origin of coal

from page 407,
1911DEC15, Holiday Jeter, age 26, occupation miner, residence Marion, married, survied by 3 dependents, widow & 2 children, cause of death falling slate, 12th District

This is all the information that I have on this accident.

The Chicago Public Library, Illinois State Library in Springfield, Milner Library in Normal, Morris Library at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, or LaSalle Public Library in LaSalle have many of the Illinois Annual Coal Reports. These Illinois reports are usually found under Library Call Number TN805.I3 A3. These reports may not only contain names and details for fatal and non-fatal accidents, but also cover strikes, details of mining operations at specific mines, location of the mines, pictures, production and operation details for specific mines.
