The Sangamon Valley room in the Lincoln Library is the best place to search. I have found over 100 obits in that room............and then you just have to walk across the hall to have the the info pulled, so you can retrieve it and make your copy. The people there are extremely helpful.

The Sangamon Valley Collection (top floor of Lincoln Library -- the public one, not the presidential one) has a card catalog file of local obituaries, yearbook photos, etc. organized alphabetically by last name so you don't need to know a date. If you need microfilm copies, they are 25 cents per page.

I had two relatives living in Springfield, ILL between 1925 and 1988. One died in 1957 and the other died in 1988. Both of their obituaries appeared in the "The State Register-Journal" of Springfield, Illinois. I was able to get copies of the obituaries by writing to the Lincoln Library in Springfield, IL.

David in Pennsylvania
John Morris Clark was born in Clark County in December 1897. His parents were Robert H. and Ella Victoria Hutchinson Clark. They lived in Pekin Ward 4, Tazewell in the 1900 census; in Marshall, Clark in 1910. The parents split before the 1910 census. I found nothing for John in the 1920 census, but his mother and brother Robert L. were living in Clark County. In 1930 John and his mother were living in Springfield. He worked for a biscuit company (Nabisco?), beginning in 1918, according to a Clark County newspaper. The Social Security Death Index has a John Clark born 9 Dec. 1897 who died in Springfield in June 1978.

I am coming to Springfield for a meeting in the middle of October, and think I will have a few hours on Friday afternoon to do a little research. I am hoping to find an obituary for John. I know he was married and divorced and had a child, but no names or dates. I'm searching on line for location of a newspaper for June 1978 that might be helpful.

Can anyone suggest which Springfield newspaper to look at and where to find microfilm or other copies to look at? Or any other places to look for information about John Morris Clark (in case I find the obit quickly and have a little extra time).

I know this is not the best way to research these things, but I hate to miss an opportunity. After all, South Carolina is a long way from Illinois, and I don't get there much any more.

Any advice will be much appreciated. Thanks.

thanks for the heads up on the info. John Charles Dougherty was born in KY on 1 May 1780 and died in Sangamon County, IL on 27 Jan 1854. Much of the info i have on him has come from the research of distant cousins. I am trying to find out if he might have been the son of Capt. John Dougherty. Capt. John's son is listed as dying in Knox County, IL. Since we have no evidence of our Johns death/burial I have been trying to find out if he had 2 wives in nearby counties at the time of his death. I do know the one that is buried in Knox county became a mormon in 1833. Again, thanks for your help. Jeaneen Dougherty

The library does have plat maps. How they are available I don't know, possibly interlibrary loan.

Your inquiry caught my eye because of the MILLER surname. Your Serilda is not connected with my Sangamon County MILLER line, but I can help you with your death certificate question. According to the online Illinois Death Index [http://www.ilsos.gov/GenealogyMWeb/IDPHDeathSearchServlet], Serilda HARBERT died 21 Oct 1918 in Illiopolis twp; the death certificate number is 0047515. As explained on that website, you can order a copy of this certificate from the Illinois Department of Public Health or the Sangamon County Clerk, or you can obtain one by visiting the Illinois State Archives Reference Room. Moreover, despite the disclaimer on the Illinois State Archives, the online list of UIS IRAD holdings does include Sangamon County death certificates from 1877 to 1927 (18 microfilm rolls), so it may be available through that IRAD.

Guy I.
