1935 envelope sent by ME NELSON of Wheaton to Colmar, France

I recently found a photograph of an old envelope that was sent by ME NELSON of Wheaton to Colmar, France in 1935. You can see the envelope on http://philgen.org (search on NELSON, select the one with Colmar, click on View, and scroll to the bottom of the page), or click on the link below. I am unable to find an ME NELSON in Wheaton and wondered if someone more familiar with the city can find him/her. I believe that Colmar may be his/her or his/her parents' birthplace and this envelope will be helpful to someone in their genealogical research. The reason I have a photo of the envelope is because of my interest in using old envelopes and postcards in genealogical research. I have an article in the spring 2009 issue of New England Ancestors entitled Philatelic Genealogy (viewable at the philgen website) and have started the philgen website.

Here is a direct link to the photo of the envelope: http://philgen.org/index.php?option=com_fabrik&c=form&am...

Your family legend about Joseph and Louis are accurate. They went to Shasta county for Gold, which angered their father so much that they were barely mentioned in the will.

Tragically, Louis/Lewis was murdered on 02 Jun 1863 at Little Cow Creek, Shasta Co., California for his gold. There is a one-line blurb in the Alta California newspaper. Lewis was buried in the Catholic Old Shasta Cemetery.

Joseph married Suzanna Kurchenbach on 15 Jul 1860 in Shasta, CA.

Maary Anne Yank, the youngest sister, married John Grom who went South to fight with the Confederates in the Civil War. I have not found anyuthing on this line.

The entire family originated in Beinheim, Bas Rhin, Alsace, France. Their line can be traced to about 1700 in local church records.

I read your post and I remembered seeing the name Hamden A. Cagwin while I was reading the History of Will County from 1878 (my current research reading). So I went back and found it. Don't know if this will help you, but sometimes it just takes that little clue.

He is listed in a biography about his father Abijah Cagwin on page 668, in Joliet Township, Will County.

You can download the history from the University of Illinois Library.

http://hdl.handle.net/10111/UIUCOCA:historyofwillcou00chic

With many thanks to the University of Illinois for making these histories available for our research.

Seeking information on death date of Clara J Williams (1877-???), who married Dr J David Larson (1885-1977) in 1919. They lived at 217 W. Hickory St in Hinsdale, IL. David was famous doctor-biochemist in Hinsdale that started company Normal Soil. Narrowed death date of wife , Clara, to between 1953 and 1977. Anyone who knows of a death index or other database that could help track down Clara's death date. She died in Hinsdale. Oak Ridge Cemetery did the creamation on David Larson, but he's not buried there. Funeral home has no records for the time period when Clara and David died.
Thanks.

I do have additional info on David Roth and family since my 1999 posting. I found the will of Normal Phelps which lists Nancy as his dau. and also mentions David Roth.
The Cemetery has not been reclocated. It is west of York Road on the north side of IL Route 19 (Irving Park Road).

With construstion at O'Hare, the entrance changes from time to time. On Wednesday, July 29th, when I was heading westbound on Irving Park Road, it was posted that the entrance was at O'Leary Drive. When you approached O'Leary Drive on the north side of the street, there was a large sign that said, Cemetery Entrance. It is easy to pass up, so I often have to turn around and go back.

As much as I hate the City of Chicago for unneccessarily disrupting and threatening the two cemeteries (Their plan will NOT solve the delay or weather problems at O'Hare.), there has never been a problem getting in (other than muddy conditions when it rains). The construction people with the flags have always been pleasant.

By the way, the Elmhurst Martha Ibbetson Chapter of the DAR just "read" the St. John's cemetery this year. Peggy Becker did a fabulous job. When the graves were unreadable or had missing gravestones, she included the info from the 1950's reading. The Bensenville Public Library has a copy and there are also pictures of each stone.

I work at the library on Wednesday and Thursdays, but am available anytime with advance notice.

Janis Arquette
Local History Assistant
Bensenville Community Public Library
200 South Church Road
Bensenville IL
630 766-4642
Lora Estelle (Croll) Roth married Charles Ford Roth on 30 Jun 1891 in Hand Co., SD. She was born on 16 Apr 1866 in Oskaloosa, Mahaska Co., Iowa and died on 7 May 1937 in Kootenai, Idaho. She was buried in GAR Cemetery, Miller, SD.

I do have the biographical data on David Roth that you provided. Would you happen to know if David had a middle name?

I have quite a bit of information on Charles Ford, Norman, Myron, Laura, and Hiram, but very little on the other children of David and Nancy Roth.

Charles:
Thanks for the ROTH information! I appreciate your response.
I earlier found the following, which provides essentially the same information - perhaps you have already seen it:

DAVID ROTH, farmer, P. O. Hinsdale, was born May 25, 1811, in Delaware County, N. Y.; is the son of Edward and Mary (Close) Roth; the father died in 1815, and the mother never re-married.
In 1835, she came to Bureau County, Ill., where our subject engaged in farming and driving ox teams to and from Chicago. In 1842, he married Nancy Phelps, the result of the union being eleven children: Serena G., Mary, Porter, Charlie, Marshall, Frank, Myram, Frances, Normaan, Hyram, and Laura.
They remained in Bureau County till 1865, at which time our subject bought land near Brush Hills. Here they remained until 1866, when they located in Hinsdale, where they have since remained, with the exception of four years which they spent in Iowa.
Solomon and Leonard, brothers of our subject, were in the Black Hawk War. Mr. Roth was first a Democrat, then a Republican, and now is a member of the Greenback party, of which he is an enthusiastic advocate.

From the History of DuPage County, Illinois by Rufus Blanchard
Page 116

If you would be willing to share such, I would love to know when and where Lora Croll Roth died, and where she is buried.

Thanks

Robert in Arkansas

To Robert from Arkansas,

I just read your reply to Lynne re. the David Roth family of Hinsdale. David Roth was also my g-g-grandfather. His two brothers, Leonard and Solomon migrated to Illinois from New York in the early 1830's. David came out later with his mother, Mary Close Roth. David married Nancy Phelps and they had eleven children: Syrena, Mary, Charles, Marshall, Frank, Francis, Norman, Myron, David P., Laura, and Hiram. Charles Ford Roth is my grandfather.

Charles Egeberg seems to have been the son of Alf Magnus Egeberg and Marie Jakobine Eriksen, both of Oslo, Norway. Alf had another daughter, Charles´half-sister in 1903 before emigrating to Chicago with Marie and their daughter Alfhild born 1902. They had 5 children altogether. Alf died in Chicago in 1915.

There are relatives in Sweden and in Norway

There was just recently (past week or two) a TV news spot on St. Johannes Cemetery, and the run-around the families are getting about relocating the graves...between the church and the airport people. I don't remember all the details, but I believe your answer is, no, the graves have not been moved as of June 2009.

This cemetery is RIGHT next to O'Hare airport. Go to www.findagrave.com and search, St. Johannes, DuPage County, Illinois. There are photos with a FedEx airplane in the background. There is also a map. This cemetery is VERY difficult to find...the access road is not well marked. You must go through "security" to get to the cemetery, since it is so close to airport property. It is on the northern edge of Bensenville, just north of Irving Park Road.

Sad to see it disturbed, but there is certainly no peace there, even today.

Bonnie

Glenda, That wa so kind of you to send me the information.
I did have that, but I didn't realize Margaret was Michael's wife. This is the first time I have heard of Timothy. Edmund had two brothers that I know of, Michael and David. Maybe Timothy was a 1st cousin or something. This opened up some new thought for me. Thank you. Claudia
