The following information, submitted by Margaret L. (Short) Stuntz, appears in the 1993 Cumberland County Illinois History Book.
JAMES GARRETT BUCHANAN
James GARRETT buchanan, son of John and Rachel Eliza (Short) BUCHANAN, was born March 19, 1825, in Switzerland County, Indiana. John was the son of George BUCHANAN, a Revolutionary War soldier. In 1813, George, his sons, William, John, David, and Wilson, and his son-in-law George Benefiel, built a blockhouse as a defense against Indian attacks. The blockhouse, called BUCHANAN Station, was located three miles northeast of Canaan, Indiana, on the line dividing Ripley and Jefferson counties. A historical marker marks the site today.

James GARRETT Buchanan's parents John and Rachel, moved with their family from Jefferson County to near Vevay, Switzerland County, Indiana, about 1824. James GARRETT was born and raised there. He was the character, Jeems BUCHANAN, in the book, "The Hoosier Schoolmaster", written by Edward Eggleston, in 1871. Considered a fresh, delightful story, the book is one of the first portrayals of American life in early Indiana.

On October 2, 1843, James GARRETT BUCHANAN married Julia Ann Peters at her parent's home in Switzerland County, Indiana. Julia was the sister of Elizabeth Jane Peters who married John Bartlett BUCHANAN.

In the fall of 1857, the John Bartlett family traveled to Cumberland County and settled on a farm jusy north of Neoga. In 1859, James GARRETT BUCHANAN, wife and then five daughters, traveled to Cumberland County. They settled on a farm just south of Neoga along the Illinois Central Railroad.

James Garett's sister, Lucinda BUCHANAN, married Alfred Wright. They were the parents of Ira Malin Wright. Ira came to Neoga in 1867 and was a dealer in grain and produce.

Traveling to Illinois from Indiana in a covered wagon, the James GARRETT BUCHANAN family encountered a stretch of bumpy wagon trail. A short time later, the family discovered that the youngest child, Indiana Belle, was missing. Frantic, the family turned around and retraced their route. Indiana Belle was found sitting along the road playing in the dirt. The bumpy road had bounced her out of the wagon.

The children of James GARRETT and Julia Ann (Peters) BUCHANAN were:
1) Rudolph, born October 28, 1846, died December 234, 1846
2) Margaret Jane, born 1847, married Thomas M. Mitchell
3) Sarah Alice, born 1850, married William J. Simpson
4) Eliza Frances, born 1852, married Dr. Francis M. Richardson
5) Mellisa Ellen, born 1854, married John A. Young
6) Indiana Belle, born 1857, married Seymore P. McAllister
7) Olive Rachel, born 1860, married Lyman T. Votaw
8) James Grant, born 1862
9) Lillie May, born 1864, married Eugene Smmith
10) Millie, born 1867, married Thomas Chester Ewing
11) William Douglas, born 1870.

Michael - there is more to this article if you would like that information. It's a short section which concerns James' Civil War time. There are also articles about Ira Malin Wright, and all of James GARRETT and Julia Buchanan's children, except Rudolph in this Cumberland County Hsitory book. I can copy those if you want them. There is no article about George Andrew BUCHANAN in this book. I hope this helps in your search. I can also be reached at mmorgan1943@hotmail.com. Marianne

Hello, Marianne

I saw your post from Jan., 2001 that you have a Maude Lockhart listed as a daughter of #9 James Garrett "Billy"

9) James Garrett "Billy", born 1857, married Sarah L. Short, children: Maude Lockhart, and Walter.

I am wondering the Maude Lockhart above was married to Jesse Lockhart of Neoga, Cumberland Co., IL. I found them listed in the 1900 Fed. Census for Cumberland and their one month old son, Carol W. I'm not related to Maude, but Jesse Lockhart married Hettie Jones (my great-grandmother's aunt) in 1901 after his first wife Maude (maiden name unknown) and baby died in Neoga, Cumberland Co., IL.

Would your Maude possibly be the same Maude I'm looking for?

Thanks for your time.

I saw the information on Thomas F Lawson (husband of Mary Ann Buchanan) in your message. I believe he's a son of America and Thomas Lawson (my g-g-grand uncle) - do you have any further information, or can you tell me how to get a copy of the 1993 Cumberland County Illinois History Book?

Several of my Lawson family were in Coles/Cumberland Counties in the mid-1800's, and any information would be appreciated.

I realize this reply is to an old post, but just following up to keep an open record for anyone else who may be looking for the answer to this.

Yes, the Maude who was Jesse Lockhart's first wife, who died 26 Sep 1900 in Neoga, Cumberland County, was the Maude Buchanan mentioned in the original post.
