Kate after 1900 - I poked around just about every conceivable way for 1910 and could not find Kate/Katherine/Catherine GOFF nee HAWKINS anywhere...SC or any other state so I assume she must have died in between the 1900 census & the 1910 census.

Remarriage is another possibility. She was fairly young in 1900, 45y & and her children were ready (or in Estelle's* case would be in a few years) to go off on their own so it's not without reason to consider a second marriage, too. However, my searches for Kate/ Katherine/ Catherine b. 1855 +/- 1 or 2 yrs turned up no one who would seem to be a good prospect.

*A note on Estelle...I think that the year for Estelle's birth is 1890 not 1897 as Ancestry indexed it. She is 29y on the 1920 census and 31y on her DC in 1921 which would be more consistant with a 1890 DOB.

Unfortunately, there's no way for me to narrow that time period down for a death/remarriage for Kate although I'm leaning more towards death.

Ancestry doesn't have any city directories for SC beyond Charleston, she's not showing up in the deaths database at Ancestry or the LDS Pilot site & there doesn't seem to be any database of SC marriages for that period.

Looks like I'll be sending for some certificates. I don't see any prohibitions on my getting a copy of Estelle's marriage certificate and the search fee is very reasonable so perhaps I'll go that route rather than Samuel's DC. Estelle is far more likely to have known her father's name than the informant on Samuel's DC. AND, the MC from Richland Co. will be less expensive than a GA DC, which in this economy, is a factor.

Thanks again.

Find A Grave is one of my favorite sites. I have posted a lot there as I find various burials. And it's great when someone goes out and takes a pix of the grave for you. A lot of the time, a virtual visit is the only way I'm ever going to get to visit that ancestor's resting place.

I did find Samuel & Estelle's family group on the 1880 census. The name of their father is "Hic" then the next letter is probably a "k" although very short & stunted and I'll be darned if I can figure out what the remainder of the name is.

http://content.ancestry.com/Browse/view.aspx?dbid=6742&p...

The enumerator also did an apparent phonetic on the surname which is "Gauf" on this census but the family make-up & ages match what I know for Estelle's family. Estelle b. abt. 1890 & her brother William, b. abt. 1883, obviously don't appear on this census.

For the moment, unless someone else comes up with something else, it looks like that death of Lillie you found for me may be my one roundabout shot at finding out just what Estelle's father's name was on the 1880 census.

Thanks again.

Glad I've helped. Good luck finding Samuel and Estellas parents. I have a sneaking suspicion that Samuels first name wasn't Samuel. I've found, doing my own Southern research that usually the names given on the census were middle names or derivitives thereof. You may want to check out the FindAGrave site once you get a burial place for Lillie. There are some cemeteries that have been checked recently and have many more recent burials, so you get lots more decendent info. Happy Hunting Sherry

Thanks for the reminder to post at surname boards. People do tend to forget to do this sometimes.

I had posted at the GOFF surname board at the the same time as this post as well as at the boards at Genealogy.com. Odum is the town they lived in so I won't be posting to the surname board for that.

While the posts here will gateway to the boards at Roots Web and the associated mailing lists, they don't gateway to The Generations Network's other site, Genealogy.com.

I've found through the years that there are folks like me who check the boards at both sites but just as many users who stick to one or the other site exclusively so I will usually post at both Ancestry & Genealogy.

And I think I will hold off on posting at the surname board for Lillie GOFF's maiden of McGUALEY for the moment since my present goal is to learn the given name of the father of both Samuel & his sister Estella who is my primary focus.

Thanks again for the important reminder.

Thanks for the information. I've never done any searching for ancestors in GA so I hadn't yet found the site whose addy you sent.

Lillie's DOD is great as is learning that my guess was right with respect to her maiden name. With Lillie's DOD I should now be able to get her DC and learn where she is buried.

Presumably she will be with Samuel and I'll be able to learn his DOD from the cemetery and then get his DC. Hopefully the informant for that will have known what Samuel's father's name was.

I've checked GA vitals and am pleased to see that I will be able to get a copy of Lillie Goff's DC as well as Samuel's once I learn a DOD for him. So yes, this information helps a great deal.

I will try for the DC's first but the information on Samuel & Lillie's descendants, too, may help me to find some living descendents who are researching who might be able to assit me with this Goff line. I'm finding Samuel's Goff ancestors in SC to be very stealthy so far.

Thanks again.

Hi. Did some looking for you and although Samuel "Sam" hasn't shown up many places I did find: WWI draft card name: Sam Goff DOB: 29 May 1874 wife: Liller had grey eyes, black hair. On the Wayne Co. Website at www.wcolweb.com/genealogy/genealogy.html under marriages I found Sanuel (sic) Goff married Lilla McGauley 2/3/1901. In the cemetery listings from the same site no Samuel, no Lillie but some of their kids William Henry Goff born
20 Nov 1901-5 Jun 1985 wife Lee Annie A b. 10 May 1908 no death date buried in Odum City Cemetery. Nicholas Perry Goff 4 Jun 1907- 4 Nov 1940 buried Piney Grove Church Cemetery. Osborn M Goff Tech 4 WWII 13 May 1917-none wife Josephine V. b. 12 May 1910-none Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery near Jesup. Under Georgia deaths I found a Lillie Goff born abt 1877 died 30 Jun 1961 Wayne Co., GA. Hope this helps. Sherry

I'm attempting to build a family tree for a 90 yr old aunt who knows little about her heritage further back than her grandparents' names due to having been orphaned around age 9.

Trying to find information on the family of Samuel GOFF who was b. May 1876 in Upper Township, Richland Co, South Carolina and moved to GA sometime before 1900.

Samuel was the older brother of my aunt's mother Estelle I. GOFF who married Robert Weston JONES of Columbia, Richland Co, SC.

I would especially like to find Samuel's death date so as to get his death certificate and learn his father's name.

1900 Odum - Samuel is a boarder in the household of David Corten; next door is the Nicholas McGAULEY family with a dau. Lill*n age 17y.

1910, Odum - Samuel 35y is married 10 yrs; wife named as Lillen Q. 30y b. GA; next door is still the Nicholas McGauley family from the 1900 census minus daughter Lill*n.

Samuel & Lillen have children - William H 9y, Rozzie C 7y(dau), Au** B 4y (dau, Perry N 2y & Lillie M */12y...illigible but under a year old.

1920 Odum - Samuel 43y & Lillen 39y (now called Lilly) have the following family make-up -
Henry 18y, Rozzie 16y, Oammie B. 14y, Perry 12y, May 10y, Clyde 8y, Alma 6y, Lewis 4y, Osburn 2y6m & Aviner 11 m (dau). Next door is still the Nicholas McGauley family.

1930 Odum - Samuel 54y (married at age 26y) & Lilia 49y (married at 21y) have the following family make-up -
Mary 20y, Clar** 18y(son), Alma 16y, Louis 14y, Osburn 12y, Christine 9y & Connie 8y. Next door now is the family of William McGauley 42y believed to be the son of Nicholas who has a 12y son Willian on the 1900 census.

One family away is William H. GOFF 28y (married at 26y) with wife Lee Ann 20y (married at 18y) and children Leland 1y 9m & Irma 6 mos.

Samuel's wife Lilia / Lillen / Lilly's possible maiden is McGAULEY based on proximity of the family of Nicholas McGAULEY with dau. Lillie b. Jan 1882 being nextdoor in 1900 and the fact that Samuel & wife Lil remain nextdoor neighbors of the Nicholas McGAULEY family through the 1930 census.

Can anyone help with this family of Samuel GOFF?

Susannah was my gggg grandmother. I have seen many family trees with her death date of 1833. She married Lewis Ryals on Oct 3, 1833. In 1850 Putnam County, FL census is

1850 PUTNAM COUNTY, FLORIDA, The 18th Division, dated November 3, 1850, stamped page 196 -
Fam 25
Louis Royals, age 70, M, Farmer, SC
Susan Royals, age 61, F, SC
Note: The family directly above them was John Royals, Lucinda and John, Jr. In 1960 census John's surname is Ryals. No record of Lewis or Susan in 1860.

I have no doubt that the above Louis and Susan are Lewis and Susannah Gibson Burney Ryals out of the Wayne County, Georgia area. I would like to hear from those who agree or disagree. Perhaps I am wrong. Thank you.

I found William HARRY 59 wife Emaline 30 sons Henry 13, John 10, Godfrey 7, Leonard 6 and Madison 4 in the 1870 Dist.1 Appling Co., Ga census. Probably your William Harvey and more of Henry's brothers names. I searched William born abt 1810 GA in Bryan then Appling Co., Ga. Happy hunting and just think outside the box when researching, follow siblings and watch for mispellings and switching between first and middle names.

Some death certificates issued before 1928 are on line. Use this website:http://content.sos.state.ga.us/index.php
select death certificates from menu on right
select advanced searach from menu at top of page
from drop down menu on right select Georgia Death Certificates; click on add; for key words use Harvey and Wayne.
The person who supplied the info for the death certificate must not have known who John's parents were.

It's not uncommon for the ages to be wrong. I would go with a dob of 1859 and William and Emeline Harvey from the 1860 Bryan County census as parents, especially has the James H age 3 is probably the Henry Harvey age 21 on the 1880 census with Jasper Harvey age 18. They are next door to John and Martha Harvey. I suspect that the William and Emeline Harvey in 1860 is the Wm Harvey age 70 and Emily, wife age 45 in the house hold of R Johnson age 32 on the 1880 Wayne Cty census.

Bernice
Mattie Harvey is my grandmother. What's remaining of the family have little knowledge of the Harvey's. Here's the text of an email from another member who found the following:
---------------------------------------
Screven Cemetery, Old Section
J. H. Harvey, SR b. 12/12/1860 d. 3/17/1925
Martha Highsmith Harvey b. 8/5/1860 d. 9/17/1944
Jasper W. Kicklighter b. 3/13/1870 d. 4/13/1945

I COULD NOT FIND JOHN HARVEY IN 1870 - HE IS BORN IN DECEMBER AND THE CENSUS WAS TAKEN IN JUNE THROUGH SEPTEMBER SO HE WAS NOT BORN YET IN 1860 WHEN CENSUS WAS TAKEN. I COULD NOT FIND HIS MOTHER THOUGH I TRIED SPELLING IT A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT WAYS - THERE ARE AT LEAST 7 JOHN HARVEYS LIVING IN 1870 IN GA BUT NOT ONE OF THEM IS YOUR JOHN - SO THE LAST NAME MUST BE BADLY MISSPELLED.

A suggestion is that you send for a copy of John's death certificate as it should show his parents' names.
---------------------------------------------------

I ordered the death certificate per her suggestion....I have not received it yet.

How did you confirm that the death certificate doesn't list the parents? Do you have a copy? What are your theories as to why the death certificate wouldn't list parents?

Thanks.

John and Martha Harvey are still in Wayne cty in 1920.
there was a Jno. H. Harvey who died in Wayne Cty GA on Mar 10, 1925 . His death certificate lists dob as Dec 12, 1860 but no parents names are listed. It says he was bron in Bryan Cty Ga. Cause of death was cerebral hemorrhage. Wife was listed as Martha Highsmith Harvey. Martha H Harvey, 84 years old who died in Wayne also on Sept 17, 1941.

It looks like they married around 1880:
1880 Wayne Cty Ga
236 236 Harvey, John 19, Ga/Ga/Ga; day laborer
Martha 19 wife, Ga/Ga/Ga
237 237 King, James F, 59
Louisa 58
Rosa, 22, dau
William, son, 24
Harvey, Henry 21, day laborer
Havery, Jasper 18 clerk in store

1900 Wayne Cty Ga'
221 222 Harvey, John H, Dec 1860 39 married 20 yrs
martha, wife, Aug 1860, 8 births 8 living
Emett, son, Feb 1881 19
John H, son, Aug 1882
Willie, son, Aug 1885 14
Florance P{, dau, Oct 1887 12
Ward, son, Jan 1890 10
Fannie, dau, April 1892 8
Henry W, son, Aug 1894 5
Mattie, dau, Nov 1898 1
Evaline, mother, May 1832 68 wd, l birth l living
Brannen, Daniel J, boarder, May 1832 68, widow, Eng/Ireland/Ireland

If this is the correct Harvey family of Bryan Cty Ga, then the 1900 census is incorrect when it lists Evaline has having had only l child:
1880 Bryan Cty Ga census is very hard to read
150 125 Havery, George or Roger, 55
Evnaline 47 wife
Sinia 20, dau
Albert ?, 19, son
Emmett, W, 17, son
Florence E, 14, dau
Miles, 12, son
Rushel V, 9, son
Brooks 7, son
'Eliza?, 53 sister

Eveline's husband is listed as George R on 1870 census, but there is no John H in household.
The "Old Ritch Cemetery" is located about a mile north of Thornton's store in K'ville on the Odom Highway. As you travel northward it is on the right of the road. I haven't been by there in many years so I have no idea what condition it is in. Sounds like a good Eagle Scout project if there are many scouts in the area.
