Looking for any & all info re George Davidson, born Ga about 1834. Married Martha A. Smith (b. 1835-1846 in Ga) on May 8, 1855. They were the parents of Mary Elizabeth Davidson, born Oct 12, 1859 or 1861in Jones County, Ga and died Nov. 3, 1923 in Bibb Co., GA. Mary Davidson married a Mr. Heath, whose 1st name is not known. Mary & Mr. Heath had a son, George Washington Heath, b. October 18, 1875; it is unknown whether there were other children. George W. married a woman named Susie, last name unknown, born September 1878 and died about 1908.

In 1900, George and Martha Smith Davidson were living in Bibb Co., GA, in the same house with their grandson George W. Heath & wife Susie & children. Also in the household were Frank Bass (b. 1860) & wife Mattie Bass (b. Abt. 1867), their children Clifford Bass (Sept. 1895), Katie, (1883). Lulah? (1893), & Laura (1898). I believe that Mattie Bass was a daughter of George & Martha Davidson.

Mattie Bass, widow, is found on the 1910 Jones Co., Ga census with son Clifford and younger children including a 7 year old daughter Willie M. Next household are George M. & Martha Davidson.

George Washington Heath is found on the 1910 Wilkinson Co. census with 2nd wife Ida (Horton) & George's 3 sons from 1st marriage, Ollie (1897), George (1904), and John (1907).

In 1870 G. M. T. Davidson (age 36) & wife Martha (age 35) are shown in Twiggs Co., GA with children Eugenia (13), Elizabeth (10), Martha/Mattie (8), Anna B.(6), & Benjamin (1). Next household are Burwell/Burrell/Brinell Smith, b. abt. 1808 & wife Elizabeth (b. abt. 1808. I believe these are Martha's parents, but no proof.

I cannot locate any of these people on 1860 or 1880 census which is maddening! This query is way too long, but can anyone please help with clues about any of these people? I would be so happy and grateful!!

I show Cary Davidson and Leah Lester were parents of James Davidson, GEORGE Davidson, William Davidson, Mary Davidson, Camilla Davidson, and Lucy Davidson. Cary Davidson and Leah Lester were married on March 5, 1829, Jones Co., Ga. (mge. ref.: "History of Jones County, Georgia," by Carolyn Williams).

I have nothing further on the Davidson family lines as my connection is through the "Lester" line (Leah Lester, shown above, is my 1st cousin 3 times removed).

My "Bass" connections were in Virginia, but I do show two in my file of that surname in Georgia, who may have been of the "Virginia" Bass line:

(1) Rebecca Bass, b. Sept. 10, 1822; d. Oct. 31, 1905, Hancock Co., Ga.; buried Lot 28, Person 1, Reynolds Chapel Cemetery, Hancock Co., Ga. She married James D. Lester, b. bef. 1797, a "Fortunate Drawer" in the Land Lottery of Georgia, 1827 (MONROE, page 41, James D. Lester, Soldier, Muscogee County). Also: "Bibb Co., Ga. Newspaper Abstracts - Georgia Journal and Messenger mentions James D. Lester in village of Culloden, adjoining property. (James D. Lester was a 1st cousin once removed of Leah Lester, shown above, who married George Davidson.)

(2) Leonidas T. Bass b. Oct. 19, 1826, d. Dec. 2, 1849, Jasper Co., Ga.; buried Bass-Boyd Cemetery, located 2 miles south of Mansfield, Jasper Co., Ga. (ref.: "Jasper County, Georgia Cemetery and Bible Records," 1969, by Jewel Moats Lancaster, Shady Dale, Georgia 31085).

I realize this does not answer your questions but may be of some use to you in conducting further research.

Ryan!! I believe you have found my missing George Davidson!! He's exactly the right age & in the right place, Jones County. I looked again in Putnam County, GA, where Martha Smith was said to be born (from Martha's daughter Mary Elizabeth's death certificate). I found 15 year old Martha with her family, father Nathan, age 40; mother Martha, age 40; brothers William (11) and Stephen (8), also LAA., age 3, female (per 1860 census, this is Lucy), and M. E., age 3 months.

But...ten years later on the 1860 census, the Smith family has moved to Jones County. Nathan, wife Martha, William, Stephen, & Lucy are there. Poor little M. E. apparently died. Martha is not there; the wonderful thing is that the Smith family is living 17 households from the Davidson family: Carey, Leah, daughters Lucy & Camilla, and son William. George is not there. Martha & George married in 1855. Circumstantial evidence, but I believe it is enough to convict! Interesting that both families had a daughter named Lucy A. I still haven't located George Davidson and Martha Smith Davidson on the 1860 census, but I will keep digging!

Very interesting, too, what you say about the Bass family! When Martha & George's daughter Mattie/Martha married Frank Bass, she was apparently marrying a cousin. A lot of my ancestors married cousins; explains a lot, I guess!

This is so fascinating; I can't thank you enough for the info! It's such a thrill when you've been "stuck" for a long time and then get "unstuck."
