Looking for Information about Council Black Ashley

Hello Fellow Historians!

I'm looking for verification of a story I found on the Internet regarding the death of Council Black Ashley, a lawyer of Madison County, FL. Mr Ashley was married to Cora Parramore (sp) and both are buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Madison.

According to this story, Mr Ashley was shot and killed in front of his office on 18 Nov 1909.

Three questions:

1.) Is it true?
2.) If so, who did it?
3.) If true, why?

Try contacting Simon Kinsey in Lee. I don't have contact info but his wife ERnestine is the moyor of Lee. He had a son named Ernest, but he wasn't born until 1960. But if there's an Ernest Kinsey from Madison County I'll bet Simon would know him.

FWIW - my ggg grandparents were David and Nancy Goff through their daughter Mary Jane "Polly" Blanton. She married John Williams and they had 15 children. They are buried at Corinth PB Cemetery south of Lee, along with many of their descendants and quite a number of Blantons.

My grandfather is Frank Xavier Blaser Born 1909, born in Bern Switzerland. His mother name was Reichmuth. Frank Xavier Blaser had many sibling who migrated to the United State in the early 1900's. He had one daughter Karen Louise Blaser who was born in 1946 in Bell, CA. Frank Xavier Blaser wed Josephine Blaser (Gross). Dates are a little vague in some areas as my grandmother was very secretive about many things. Josephine Blaser (Gross) may have been German Jew descent, but didn't want anyone to know. Any information would be appreciated.

Chambers,Alabama , and 1930 Census report. You will find
this location is less than a few miles from West Point,
Troup, Georgia. I Am almost certain that these are your

I am searching for the family of Eli and his wife Margarett Hardy who 1st appear in Jackson county in the 1900 census. They are both buried in the Grant cemetery in Marianna,Fl. Eli had 7 sons; Alexander, Giles, Peter, Levi, William, Eli and Henry. Peter, or Simon Peter was my ggranfather. I know that Eli and Margarett were in Ala in the 1880 census. But was it simply a boundary change or did they move into Fl. Census states they were born in South Carolina but I have been unable to find any evidence of this fact. Would appreciate any help anyone can give me on my family.

Hello,

I'm trying to find my aunt's Danguole Kay (Malevskaite) and John Kay (Jonas Kaladauskas) family in USA.

They have three children:
- son MARTIN KAY;
- son DARIUS KAY;
- daughter RAMUNE KAY (maybe now she get married and change surname).

Some time they lived in Florida. Later go to Chicago, MI or to this area.

As I know Danguole Kay died in 2001-2002 and burried in Chicago lithuanians cemetry (Sv.Kazimiero).

For an exceptional history of Jefferson County see Jerrell Shofner's History of Jefferson County. (I checked the index - no Platts)

Although I live in Leon County my ancestors were all over in Madison County so I'm not particularly familiar with Leon County stuff. I noticed in the paper this week that the Tallahassee Genealogical Society is working on a heritage book for the county and soliciting stories and family histories.

Living here, I have access to the State Archives and would be happy to do lookups for you as time permits. You also should take a look at the State Archives and Libraries' website. www.floridamemory.com It has a marvelous digital collection, plus catalogs for the archives and library. None of the archives materials can be loaned, but some of the State Library materials can be obtained through Interlibrary Loan through your local library.

Thank you for your attention to my post.
My GGrandmother, Nancy Platt, was born on 25 Feb 1836 in what is now Leon or perhaps Jefferson county. Do you know what the area of Leon and Jefferson counties was called in 1836?
I show her father, William Platt, in the 1835 FL Land Records. William signed, as Land Patentee, document #4431 on 20 Oct 1835 in Tallahassee. My GGrandmother, Nancy Platt, was born four months after William was found in Tallahassee.
Nancy lived all of her adult life in Jefferson County, FL. Do you know of a reliable reference for the history of the FL territory from 1800 - 1850?.

Florida birth records officially begin in 1906. While there may be some earlier records held at the county level, 1836 is prior to statehood so it is highly unlikely any records begin that early.

She has several children with Lawson Meeks and also has a 'Orphan' Jesse Kennedy living in her home. Morris Sampson and Amanda Tookes Sampson

I am looking for my great grandparents Morris and Amanda Tookes Sampson. Morris Sampson was born in North Carolina in 1834. He and his wife and children show up in the 1870 and 1880 censuses in Madison. By 1885, Amanda is a widow. Morris was listed as a county officer in 1870. Oral history says he was hanged. Amanda and the children moved to Jacksonville around 1890. Their daughter, Charity, married Ambrose Reache, a shoemaker, and they lived in LaVilla. This Benjamin was born in Bladen Co, NC, later moved to Lowndes Co, GA, then Quitman, Co, GA, Madison & Taylor counties, FL, then finally to Plant City, Hillsborough Co, area. Hector Patterson Murdered?

Looking for information on my gg-grandfather Hector Patterson who lived in Madison County in the 1850s. There is a book of old newspaper transcripts at the DAR library in Washington which has an article from the Madison Messenger saying a Hector Patterson was found murdered near Scott's Pond and that the perpetrator(s) were unknown. The article was from September 1858.
I am descended from Hector Patterson through his son Donald Patterson, Donald's son Hugh Carroll Paterson, and Hugh Carrol's son John McKay Patterson.
Is there someone who knows this family who can tell me if my gg-grandfather is the same Hector Patterson who was murdered? Are there some Madison Messenger archives somewhere that I can search to see if there were any further articles on the subject?

Did you know a Louie Lacey Holloway b abt 1900 d abt 1947 of a snake bite. They lived in Miami for many years. Before he died Harry Albertina Romer b 1923 d 1997 and he divorced. My husband is his some and they had three girls with one living. We can't find anything out about the Holloway side of George's family who lived in Miami so we can go on to look for the history of the rest of his family.

My grandfather was Mallory Howard Williams, Jr. He was very close with his Aunt Pink and cousin David. We believe that Pink was his father's sister. We don't know her real name, or married name. Anyone have any info. Pink would've been born in the early 1900's.

Elaine, You mentioned Mrs. Cordie Welch in your response. Mrs. Welch was one of my "memorable" teachers at Lee School in Madison (Lee School at Lee had burned). In the patois of the area and time, we called her Miss Cordie. She was the teacher I HAD to go see after I graduated from OCS.

My name is David Lamb. My two grandparents Clarence Henry Lamb and Ila Johnson Lamb are from Lee, Florida. Many Lambs and Johnsons are buried in that cemetary too. I know of no church minutes to assist you on your 'journey'.

Walker cemetery Sophia Hensley Sabayrac

I am searching for an obituary for Sophia Hensley Sabayrac who is buried in the Walker cemetery in Madison co, Florida.

Sophia died in March 7, 1983. Could someone tell me what local newspapers could have carried the obit? I am uncertain where she lived. I am unfamiliar with this area of Florida or where to begin my search.

I believe this Sophia is a cousin to my great grandfather.

Seek info on Mt. Moriah P.B. Church and The Ochlocknee P.B. Association, to which Mt. Moriah belonged. I believe that the church was located in northern Jefferson County from about 1825 to 1875. I am the daughter of John C Carter who was born in Pennsylvania. He was 21 and my mother was 20 when they got married. My brother, his son, was born January 6, 1962 and then died November 2, 1967. His death took place in Jacksonville Fl. My parents were not married at the time of his death. I have no memory of them being married.
I have no information on any of his family. On my birth certificate his usual occupation: Yeoman 2/c and his kind of business or industry: U.S. Navy.
If there is anyone that could help me I would appreicate it.

Married to AUGUSTUS S. WILLARD on 25JUN1895; (3)ROSA S. b:07FEB1876 in BLAKELY, EARLY CT, GA. Married to G.B.GARWOOD on 24JUN1896; (4)ELLEN DOUGLAS b:07DEC1884 in GREEN COVE SPRINGS, CLAY CT, FLORIDA. Married H. RALPH BURTON on 19MAY1903.

Robert W. Davis enlisted at age 14 into the CSA and surrendered with the Army of GENERAL JOSEPH T. JOHNSTON in GREENSBORO, NC in 1865. In 1869 Robert was admitted to the Bar in, of and for the State of Georgia; age 20.

He moved his family to the state of Florida @1879 and was elected to the State of Florida Legislature from CLAY COUNTY in 1884. He was eleceted the Speaker of the House of Representitves in 1885 and ran for Governor of Florida in 1888 but was defeated.

In Robert Davis was elecetd as a member of Congress in 1885 to fill a vacancy left by the death of a Florida Representitve and elected again in 1886 to fill a full term.

Robert married again after the death of Maria Davis @26JUN1892 to HELENA L. KEATING, there were no children from this marriage.

We need information on the death date and place for Robert, Maria Mercer and Helena Keating Davis, as well as information on Maria and Helena' families.
