Sarah and Charles Adams

Am seeking any information on a Isaac Adams, b abt. 1834, TN, Wife Eviline/Emeline Dean Adams born abt 1841 in KY. Three children in particular, Charles, b abt 1870, Sarah b 25 Dec 1873 in MO or OK, Susan b abt 1866 in MO. It appears Isaac was married twice. 1 Julian and 2 Evaline/Emeline. It appears that Isaac and Eviline both died or disappeared between 1870 and 1880 as the children appear in ½ brother Jesse’s house in 1880 in Roseville, Logan County, AR. Place of death of parents unknown. Between 1870 and 1880 they had the child Sarah, age 6 that appears in the Logan County AR census. Almost all the children in the Logan County AR census appear to be orphans. Even the G W McAddo appers to be an orphan as he appears to have siblings scattered around other Logan County AR homes at that time. He may also possibly be related to Schrivners. It is unknown if he is related to the Adams. Sarah Agnes Adams married Rufus Edwards in Johnson County, AR in 1894. The only other information about her or Charles is her obituary in 1934 that indicates Charles was living in Spiro, OK at that time and her obituary indicates that she was born in Spiro, OK, and not MO. I have no information on any of the others. All seem to have disappeared after 1880. I do not know who Isaac Adams parents were. I do not know that the Sarah in the 1880 census is in fact the Sarah in the obit in 1934, but, the ages of Sarah and Charles and proximity to where they lived as adults match what little info there is. Both appear to be orphans as was the case with the Sarah being sought. Any help at all would be appreciated.
I am showing Voisy's grandparents as Nathaniel Edward Rogers and Grizzela D. McAlester who married Feb 04, 1852 Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Showing Nathaniel's parents as John Rogers b abt 1791 S.C. and Jane 'Jennie' Powell. I am showing Grizzela's parents as Francis McAlester and Hanna Etta Cowley. Thanks for sharing. 'R.E. Hinson Jr whose gggrandfather George W Henson/Hinson b abt 1799 NC lived out his life and died in Logan Co AR as did his wife Anna Forbish-Henson/Hinson (buried in Johnson Cemetery). George and Anna's grandaughter Versia 'Versie/Voisy' Arebelle Henson (thru their son George 'Brown' Henson) married Alfred Elijah Rogers Feb 13, 1907, Logan Co AR. Versie/Voisy's sister Mary Emma 'Emily' Henson married Robert Clayton 'R.C.' Freeman on Oct 30, 1898 Logan Co AR. Versie/Voisy's brother Steven George Henson married a Versia 'Voisy' Rogers b abt 1910 (a daughter of Harvey W Rogers and Rosa Lee Redding of Logan Co AR). That is some of my Henson/Hinson line connections to the Rogers, Freeman, and Redding/Redden family lines of Logan Co AR. Thanks again for sharing.

I found Lawrence D. Horton, Jr., (Mother a Rogers; father a Horton) in the California Death Records. He was born April 13, 1921, in Arkansas, and he died in Orange County, California, January 14, 1945.
I also found this:
D. Lawrence Horton, 18, Paris, married Voyza Rogers, 20, Paris, March 20, 1920, in Logan County (J-529).
This is more evidence that she was really born in November of 1899, not 1900.
I also found Lawrence D. Horton, Sr., in the California Death Records. He was born April 11, 1903, in Minnesota, and he died September 21, 1973, in Los Angeles County (90), California. It looks like he and Voisie were divorced.

I haven't found any marriage records but I did find and old picture of Voisie's son. The back reads: Lawrence Horton Jr., Died in a plane crash in WWII. I will post the picture on ancestry and the Paris site. I also found the family in the 1930 census for Blythe, Riverside, California. Voisie married Lawrence D Horton and two children are named, Lawrence Jr & Faye. Now I have to find out about the name Brewer.

Many thanks to you for your help.

You are the best!

Hi Betty! Is this the Betty from the Paris, Arkansas website? I should have known to ask you first. I am forever saying thanks to you. I do appreciate your help so much. And if this is not who I think it is, please forgive me.

Could Voyza/Voisa/Voisie have been married twice? First to Horton and then Brewer. I found her in the California Death index and her mother's name was Freeman. I attended her funeral with my Dad Everett E. Rogers in California when I was still in my teens, that had to be in the 1960's. You would think that I would remember where that was, but for the life of me can't seem to recall. She died of Leukemia.

I have been looking for Jennie Rogers family, she died young and must have been married to Sewell.

Do you know anything about Voyza'a or Jennie's children?

I am working with a person who is from the Hueytown, Alabama Historical Society and has researched the John Rogers family for many years. I noticed on his website that he didn't have information for my Grandfather Remus Edward Rogers. He didn't know where Remus migrated to and asked for more information, so I am doing all that I can. I will leave you the link to the John Rogers tree here, if you are interested. I don't know if this link will work.

Thanks Again,

Janice

http://docs.google.com/gview?a=v&pid=gmail&attid=0.1...

I am looking for information for my Aunt Voyza E Rogers. I found her maiden name on the San Francisco death Index. But I remember that she once lived in Blythe, Riverside County, California. She was born 03 Nov 1900 near Paris, Arkansas. She died 15 Aug 1965 in San Francisco, Cal. Her Parents were Remus Edward Rogers and Sarah Elizabeth Freeman of Greasy Valley, Logan County, Akansas. I would so appreciate it if anyone has any information on her family.

LaWanda, may I ask where you find the "Kapok" middle name for Joseph?

Tim, may I ask if you have the same middle name for him?

These comments are from my sisiter-in-law, a great-granddaughter of Joseph K. PHILLIPS:

"... if you can, reply that I always was told that his name was Joseph KING PHILLIPS. Have never EVER heard the Kapok name. Also, the Macon, Georgia, was just family talk, as far as I know, nobody has ever been able to actually trace him to Macon. My dad used to say that Grandpa had said he was from ""around"" Macon, but that is the extent of it."

"I was reading over the genealogy, and they have my grandfather's name down as Robert E. Lee PHILLIPS (he was the baby of the family). I never ever heard or saw anything that had the "E." in it. His name was just Robert Lee PHILLIPS. I will ask my aunts about this, but even in his obituary there is no E. in his name."
Hi Lea,

Thanks for your interest! It is quite a coincidence!! I have traced my Hadley branch back to New Jersey, but not anything further back across the ocean. My line goes back to a Chase Hadley in New Jersey in the early 1800's. Your line very well could have been part of the same family, however I only have a "skeleton" (no pun intended!) genealogy on the descendants of Chase Hadley.

Thanks for responding!
Peggy
James Franklin Hunter was my grandfather's grandfather. James WAS in fact, the son of Sherrod Hunter, who is said to be buried at the Boydston Cemetery near Branch, AR, though there is no headstone bearing that name. In the area of the cemetery where he is said to be buried, the headstones were made of poor quality stone, and there are only stumps left. James's wife, Elizabeth (Galey) Hunter is buried there, though, near her son, my father's grandfather, Robert Lafayette Hunter. Sherrod's father Dempsey is also said to be buried near there by a creek called Six Mile, though no one currently living could say where that grave lies. James is, of course, buried at Jefferson Barracks, having died while a POW at the federal prison in St Louis. An interesting side note is that Elizabeth (Galey) Hunter did not sign the 'oath of allegiance' until after her husband's death. This was a requirement at that time to be able to own property and to vote. Before James went off to war, family lore has it he and Elizabeth sent their daughters to Texas where they would be safe, but kept Robert with Elizabeth. I have seen photos of Robert with his sisters years later, but I do not have copies.

Hello there from sunny California. I have been trying to find information on my mothers family. She was born in Blue Mountain and some of my Great uncles and their families are still in that area tody but we have long since lost contact. The two generations before my time are all deceased and I am the oldest member of my generation. while I am still going and have the time I would like to flesh out my family tree. As no one else in my family has ever been tempted to do so I thought it would be a nice gift for the already growing 3 generations following me. My mother was Ethel Helena Cole b: 1913 her father was Rufas Manson Cole b: 1886, his father was Manson Marian Cole b: 1854. The next generation back was MM's father Mark Cole who married Serena Hooper. If you could find and information on these I would be so pleased. Thanks for your time.

Hi all,

I own a copy of this book and would also be happy to check for any surnames. A warning in advance. Not all of those that have lived in the county are included. When the Logan County Historical Society decided to publish this book in 1985 they sent out requests for family stories and historical information about significant places and events. If a descendant of your particular family line was not aware of the upcoming publication there may be little or no information concerning your family.

This was the fate of my ancestors who lived in Logan County for almost 70 years. Unfortunately their descendants migrated west leaving no one behind to contribute a family history. Maybe one day the Society will consider publishing a second volume of family histories so those of us could contribute our information.

With the above in mind I will be happy to check for any names you may be interested in. There is a very good surname index in the book. The book also contains excellent articles on all the incorporated towns in Logan County if interested.

Lindy
Hello! I don't know if you are still looking up people in Logan County, Arkanasa but I have an obituary for a Cecil Corley he died at 28 years old in his parents house Dec. 24, 1931. He was buried at the Mooe cemetery at Ellsworth. His father John L. Corley. I have a John L. Corley in my family tree but cannot find any sources on him. My John L. Corley's parents were John S. Corley and Cythia "Athy" Box from Corley, Arkansas. Can you tell me if John S. Corley had a son named John L Corley and if so did he have a son named Cecil Corley. I will attach the obituary from Paris, Arkansas.

My gggrandmother was Mary Ann Ryan (Brogdon, McDaniel). She was appropriated land in Alabama from her husband's military service. Clairborne Brogdon died and the land was confiscated by the State of Al. because she was Indian heritage. Her parents were William Smith Ryan and Patsy Forman. They lived in Choctaw Indian territory. Her oldest daughter is said to look identical to an American Indian, her name was Missouri Jane. Her family lived with Mary Ann McDaniel. They all moved to Texas, Mary Ann and husband lived in Cass Co. and Missouri Jane lived in Henderson Co., Tx. I am told they hid when the authorities came by for census taking, etc. because they would be sent to Oklahoma Reservation. I would like to know more about William Smith Ryan and Patsy Forman. Were they Indians? Was John Brogdon a fur trader from England at that time?

Hi Beth! I had a chance to look at my tree and the link that you have here.

My Great Grandmother was Martha Alice Frost Corley B: Mar 1861 at Short Mountain, Logan, Arkansas & D: 1920 Short Mt., Logan, Arkansas. She married James Monroe Corley 09 Jan 1879 in Clark, Logan, Arkansas. He was the son of John S. Corley & Cynthia "Athy" Box. Her parents were: John V. Frost & Elizabeth James. Martha Alice Frost is on the Tree that you gave me the link to.

There is a Mary Ann Frost on my tree and it shows that she was my 2nd Great Aunt and the sister to John V Frost my 2nd Great Grandfather.

There are many of the same surnames on that tree that are on mine but so far I can see no direct links besides My Great Grandmother Martha Alice Frost & My 2nd Great Aunt Mary Ann Frost.

This is a side note however: The husband of Martha Alice Frost was James Monroe Corley and the following story is about his father.

Killed by Bushwhackers 10 May 1864
http://www.angelfire.com/ak2/genealogy/gen251.html

"John S. Corley's family were in AR by 1854. They settled on Flat Top Mountain, south of Corley Springs and North of Mt. Magazine. They homesteaded 80 acres on Patent 27 Feb 1860, 40 acres were sold to Milo Holister by Porter L. on 10 Dec 1877, possibly because Cynthia had died just prior to that date. During the Civil War, John S. Corley was loyal to the Union. He was killed by bushwhackers on 10 May 1864, hanged not far from Cove Lake." There is more information available at the above link.
This information is from a family member I met online: "Corley Community and cemetery was named for John Corley. It included a post office, school, church and other buildings. John S Corley was killed by bushwhackers on 10 May 1864, hanged from a tree that is still standing on government land, not too far from Cove Lake."

I hope this helps. I do have some very old photos that I just inherited and they are the James Monroe & Martha Alice Corley family.

Happy Researching,

Janice
Hi Janice,

If you descend from William and Mary Sabra Christie Bowers, through their daughter Mary Sabra Bowers and her husband, James Monroe Springer, how do you descend from Jacob W. Frost and Elizabeth Corley?

Here's the history as I put it together. Born ca. 1829 AL, Josiah C. C. Womack's Civil War record says he was born in Jackson Co., AL. He doesn't appear on any census record until the 1860 Clark Twp., Johnson (now Logan) Co., AR census with his wife, Mary Ann Frost. Their first known child, Martha L. E. Womack Porter was born Dec 1854 in MS.

The Jacob Frost family, including his parents, John Frost and Rebecca Hogue, are on the 1850 Tishomingo Co., MS census. So Josiah C. C. Womack and Mary Ann Frost must have married around 1853 and close to Tishomingo Co., MS.

There is a record of Mary Ann Frost Womack's death on the US Federal Census Mortality Schedules, 1850-1880 in 1870:
Mary A. Wormac, died Mar 1870 of Pneumonia. That was shortly after the birth of their son, Stephen Alonzo Womack, who was born in Oct 1869. Ancestry.com now has her name as Mary Ann Wessner, but it formerly was Wormac. One of my fellow Womack researchers has the Womack death indicies from many years ago on Ancestry.com, and he has Mary Ann's death record as it formerly was.

I researched the family of Josiah C. C. Womack and gave it to Gerald Walker. He has it on Rootsweb's World Connect.

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

If this link doesn't work, go to World Connect and input:

Josiah C. C. Womack - as I have typed it.

I also gave the info to a Frost researcher, but she doesn't have the correct information regarding Mary Ann Frost and Nancy Jane Bowers Womack.

Please write me if you wish to!

Beth Walton
waltonea0057@sbcglobal.net

I am sorry I haven't read the story yet but printed it out and will read it later, busy day ahead. But I did notice the name Frost & Corley. My 3rd Great Grandfather & Grandmother are, according to my records, Jacob w. Frost & Mary Elizabeth Corley. They had a daughter named Mary Anne Frost born 1834 Perry, Alabama & died in 1870 in Arkansas. I don't know if all my information is correct but this is the link where I got some of my info. I will copy and paste it here & I hope that it works: http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi

I can't wait to read the story and see how my family fits.
William Oscar Springer's Aunt Nan Womack was Nancy Jane Bowers Womack. She married 1st a McIntire and then she married Josiah C. C. Womack. Josiah's 1st wife was Mary Ann Frost. On the 1870 Short Mountain Twp., Franklin Co., AR census, Nancy Jane Bowers McIntire and her siblings, James Madison and Martha Bowers are living with Mary Ann Frost Womack's parents, Jacob W. Frost and Elizabeth Corley. The Bowers surname on the 1870 census is indexed on Ancestry.com's census as BOWENS.

Aunt Nan couldn't have been more than 18 yrs. old when she tried to get her half brother, Redden Barnes off the steamboat. She was born Dec 1843.

I am not related to any of these folks, but I am a Womack researcher.

Beth Walton

I do not have anything specifically for E. O. CURBOW however I have a suggestion and that is that you might want to search in what was Indian Territory until late 1907 in now OKLAHOMA censuses....alot of Logan County families came here into Leflore County, OK. (Poteau is county seat)about that time.) And the name is spelled differently here, or KERBOW. They were here in the early censuses and there are a few still here only females so I don't know their married names, other than one person who married a KERBOW (he is now deceased) but she is at least 71 so may be able to help you. My email addy is okiegrlgg@aol.com if you wish to pursue this, I can give you her married name now.
Hope this may lead you to the right persons.
Glynda Ellman

I am looking for information on Edward Odell Curbow and his family. Wife - Ellen Lola McKeethan Curbow. Son - Charles Edward Curbow. Edward Odell was my husband's great uncle. Born in Texas July 1916 but spent most of his life in Logan County, Arkansas. Thanks.
