James Franklin
Hunter was my grandfather's grandfather. James WAS in fact, the son of
Sherrod Hunter, who is said to be buried at the
Boydston Cemetery near Branch, AR, though there is no headstone bearing that name. In the area of the cemetery where he is said to be buried, the headstones were made of poor quality stone, and there are only stumps left. James's wife, Elizabeth (
Galey)
Hunter is buried there, though, near her son, my father's grandfather, Robert
Lafayette Hunter. Sherrod's father
Dempsey is also said to be buried near there by a creek called Six Mile, though no one currently living could say where that grave lies. James is, of course, buried at
Jefferson Barracks, having died while a
POW at the federal prison in St Louis. An interesting side note is that Elizabeth (
Galey)
Hunter did not sign the 'oath of allegiance' until after her husband's death. This was a requirement at that time to be able to own property and to vote. Before James went off to war, family lore has it he and Elizabeth sent their daughters to
Texas where they would be safe, but kept Robert with Elizabeth. I have seen photos of Robert with his sisters years later, but I do not have copies.
