Here is what I have found since the posting. Samuel H HOLMES is the son of Samuel HOLMES and Lorinda ENSIGN. The older Samuel is the son of Peter HOLMES and unknown and he was born 1 Apr 1802 in NY. Peter HOLMES was born abt 1754 in NY and is buried in Clayton county IA (Rev War marker).

Lorinda ENSIGN is daughter of Seymour ENSIGN and Charlotte HOLIDAY. Seymour is son of Datus ENSIGN and Abigail WOOLWORTH. Seymour was born abt 1780 in Hampden county MA and died 24 Sep 1854 in Genessee county NY. Charlotte was born abt 1779 in New London county CT and died 15 Jun 1866 in Genessee county NY (do not know parents). The ENSIGN line goes back to early 1600s.

As far as the HOLMES line goes, I stop at Peter. I also have not be able to find where Samuel and Lorinda died though some have it in Pulaski county AR. If you have any more info, I would love to have it and I will gladly share what I have.

Thanks
Susan in Sequoyah county OK

Southard family (families) in Crawford County

Researching James Thomas 'Tom' Southard who died in Latimer County, Oklahoma, 1996. Thus far, our research indicates he is the son of James H Southard, b NC abt 1873. Continuing, we think we have found that James and his wife, Anna, died in 1917 and the small children were farmed out among family members. We have found some of the children in the home of Jobe, who appears to be the eldest child of Tom and Anna. We have been unable to locate Tom in 1920.
In 1930 it appears he is in Jobe's home in Oliver Springs Township, Crawford County, AR.
Is anyone familiar with this family? How can we get death records for the Gill Cemetery and Dripping Springs.
Gill Cemetery: We think James H and Anna d 1917 are Tom's parents.
Dripping Springs: We think Henry Alvin and Job are Tom's brothers.
Appreciate any help/guidance/corrections/crumbs we can get!!
Thanks
Pat
in Oklahoma

Tina, Not really sure whom you are referring to. Samuel and Feriby did not have a son named William. Samuel had a brother named William though. And I know that probably most if not all of the Rush's in and around Crawford County are related and therefore related to my great-great grandfather who was one of two children that remained in Kentucky when Samuel moved from there to Alabama. Samuel was quite the wanderlust. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, moved to Kershaw County, S.C., then moved to Cumberland County, Kentucky and then to Jackson County, Alabama, and from there to Crawford County, Ark. I have a lot of infotmation on all the family except the Arkansas crew. Feel Free to contact me by email or cell phone 334-805-4009. Victoria

Hi, I've just started researching the Capps line for a descendant of John Capps through his son, who was also named Larkin. I have some questions and hope this contact will still reach you. I have seen online trees at Ancestry that show Jemima as John's mother (and list her as "Jemima Walden", but they don't list any source information at all. Also, I have seen some online trees there that show Lucy J Capps as being originally Lucy J. Jones. In one census, there is a William Jones living with Lucy and John. I then found an 1850 Census entry in Jasper County, Missouri, that matched having a Lucy J and a William of about the correct ages. They were living with a Phoebe Jones (widow). The oldest son (brother to Lucy and William) was named John. In the 1840 Census, there is a family of a John Jones, living in the same township, that had approximately the correct listing of dependants to match, except for one child "missing" who had been listed on the 1850 Census. Maybe that child was an adopted relative. At any rate, I am thinking that this family of John and Phoebe Jones may have been the parents of Lucy J Capps, born in Missouri. Also, what is the evidence available for the (Jenny)? Hinds mother for John and what is the evidence available for the Tharp last name for Jemima. As I said above, there are online trees on Ancestry who list her as "Walden", but I've learned from experience that online trees can be wildly wrong and the mistakes spread. I just don't know what documentation exists.

Linda,
Sorry I didn't get with you til now but Aunt Jodie is a hard girl to get a hold of!
I just talked to her and she said that my grandfather; a man we all called "Pa" was James Leslie Miller and his father's name was Mac McGuire Miller (not sure about whether this is the right spelling; Aunt Jody wasn't sure about these spellings) and he married Amanda Jane Lowden.
So I guess the Scots is on both sides of our family...
She also said that my mom was married to Jay Glosson in Austin at the courthouse and she thought her brother and sis in law were witnesses. That would be Dean and Loretta Miller....
Hope this helps. I will keep looking for info.
Oh and also she said that my great grandmother (Nettie McGrew's mom) was a Cherokee. So I'll look into that although not sure how well that will go.
Let me know if you get any info for me!
Thanks cuz....
Kim

Jim was a very sweet man and the white hair was so lovely. My mother says he turned white over night when he was about 18 yrs old. whether from illness or a shock I do not know. I was very young and spent some time with them. Your grandmother had very long hair and would sit at the dresser and brush it out every night. It would touch the floor. Then she would braid it and wrap the braid around her head. I loved the way they all talked. A slow slow drawl and Jo anne has lost some of it but she still sounds like aunt Lena. My brother Travis Jr. would love to talk with all of ya'll and so wouuld my sister Janice. She lives in Leander right out of Austin and Jr. is in Lampasas. So glad to finally reach some of Margies family. Thanks for contacting me. Linda

Linda,
Hi!
I guess we are related. My maternal grandmother was Lena Preece Miller. She married James Leslie Miller and they had five living children. All the children are gone but my Aunt Joann. My mother married Jay Glosson and had three children; Johney Lee Glosson, Richard Leslie Glosson and Kathleen Suzanne Glosson. She then divorced and married my dad Ronald Elwood Spradling. They had me Kimberly Ann (Spradling)Weninger, Rhonda Kay (Spradling)Snyder, Kerry Len Spradling and Ronald Cash Spradling.
I hope this helps you and I'd like to merge this with our Spradling tree here if we can.
Say my family had Native American blood on both my granfathers side of the family and my grandmothers (Lena). Could it be possible that George W McGrew was married to a Native American? I know that they had both Cherokee and Commanche....not sure which side had which...
Let me know what all you need...I'm gonna have to get dates of some of my relatives on births and deaths for you.
Thanks so much for helping me! It looks like you've been really busy!
Have a good one...and feel free to email me if you wish!
Kim Weninger

Sorry Kim, I replied before I read your other messages. Yes, I knew Margie when I was a child. She was very beautiful. Her mother was Lena Preece Miller who was Travis Preece's sister. You have a very big family. Are you not in touch with your aunt Joanne? She lives near Burnet, Tx. If you would like to contact me personally you can email me at linda_feem1@yahoo.com. We can go from there and I can fill you in on a lot of it. Be looking to hear from you. Linda

Hi Kim, my name was Linda Tyler and Travis Franklin Preece was my stepfather. He raised me from a small child. Franklin Boone Preece was his father and it is belived that he came to Texas from Kentucky. He married Nettie McGrew from Oklahoma. Her father was George McGrew but we have been unable to find any thing on her, even a name. The Preece family migrated to Texas and were in the Austin area way back. The Preece cemetary has graves that are quite old. They did own lots of land in the Travis county and Williamson county area. For some reason unknown to us they lost nearly all of it. There are lots of Preece's in that area. The Shannon family may have some info that I don't. One of Daddy's sisters married a Shannon and also there are some Hickman's in the family from that area. An aunt named Pearl married a man named Pearl how weird is that. Franlkin Boon Preece is buried in Lometa, Tx. a small town in central Tx. where he was living when he died. I have been trying to piece together more history so if there is anything that you can help with please do. What was your mother's name? Daddy had two daughters who moved to Alabama, Mississippi and Fl. area. I don't think that Eldera had any girls but Maudetta did by adoption and then 1 by birth, I believe. Eldera was married to I think Ray Roberts and Maudetta was married to Luther (Jim) Harmon. Any help there would be greatly appreciated. The family has lost all contact with those children and would love to touch base with them. Thanks Linda

I am curious about the history of Crawford County in the Civil War years. Does anyone have any knowledge or stories about the families leaving the area during the war? I've found some ancestors in Arkansas in 1850 and have noticed some of them moved, apparently about the time of the Civil War, to Missouri. Then, I learned they were back in Arkansas after the war. Most of these people moved just across the state line, barely into Missouri.

You have found your brother and I have found my roomate and best USAF pal, Bob Edgar. We roomed together at two bases, and drank, partied, and broke most of the rules, but it was wartime and that's what flight crew do. We were a cocky lot.

Thankfully, Bob has been found and brought home to you. I imagine his adoptive parents are dead. I met them at Moody AFB, GA before we went to Mather AFB in California. I learned of Robt's death from a mutual friend, a LT. Lindsay, at the Officers' Club at Osan AFB, Korea, and I cried when I got back to my room alone. It was the only time.

Take care of his memory, and as the ancient Egyptians said, "A person is never truly dead as long as their name is remembered and spoken." Robert J.
She married William Butler. Her daughter Jennie was my grandmother who was married to Fred Whitaker. Kate was born in Alabama, moved to Arkansas. I am not sure if she moved to Oklahoma, but my grandmother did. Kate children were Wesley Butler (female), Huttson Butler (male) William Butler, and Jennie Butler.

I'm not related.

Census records ONLY require the state or country of birth.
VERY few census takers recorded the city/town or village of birth.
