I know that Lollar's was still open in 1946 and for a good number of years after that. I was born in 1946 and I can remember my family taking all of our pictures there to be developed. When I remember going with my family to the store it was on 21st S. right as you went over the viaduct going into downtown Birmingham.

Contact the Birmingham Public Library--they have an online service and usually reply rather quickly.
http://www.bham.lib.al.us/services/ask/
Looking for African American / Native American Chanie Person (also found in the records as Chaney and Chanis) born about 1820 - 1825 - married to Frank Jones - lived in Muscogee Co (Columbus) Georgia and Russell Co (Hurtsboro) Alabama. Known children are Benjamin b. 1840, Abraham b. 1843, James b. 1844, Mallard b. 1845 and Howard b. 1850 who all lived in Hurtsboro.
From verbal history from our Grandma Ella (James' granddaughter) - he was "half Indian". She wasn't sure which parent - Chanie or Frank - or what tribe - she thought Cherokee but wasn't sure. When I pointed out that the location was more likely Creek, she thought that was right. Grandma Ella was in her late 80's when she told the story and has since passed.
Frank was very likely a slave owned by William C. and his son James R. Jones of Muscogee Co.
Thanks,
Cathy
cameedobermans@charter.net

Thanks so very much for your guidance, dalton! I hadn't thought about dling the enumerators instructions, or looking in Georgia, as all the children's stated Birthplaces are Ala. but your right they weren't far from the border and could have gone back there! And I had only been documenting those I thought were close matches but i think your right, I need to branch out and start documenting all of them! Again, thank you very much for the tips!

Ambre it seems to me that you are doing many of the correct things, but at this point do not take other reseachers information. Trust your own work, and keep searching, and documenting source data. He is living with different families in 1880 and in 1900. Willie and William are different people. At this point do not get involved with the Bulkhalter family till you find source information on your own. Keep searching and recording information about all Holt families. My next effort would be to attempt to find the parents of Willie and Lawson from the 1880 census. Search the 1870 Georgia census for a family with a 1 age son Lawson and a 17 year old son Willie, and a 3 year old Richard. If I read correctly you have census data showing these three as brothers. Take the time to record all the information you find so you can refer to it next week or next month. Even record the variations and the items that you do not understand and question. Some day you will find the answer. Even things like one reference giving the father born in Ala and another states born in Georgia. Census enumeratodrs do not seem to have placed as much attention on some parts of the form as other parts. Also down load the actual census blank form and study it. The questions ask were different from year to year. You may want to down load the instructions to the enumerator. They were given different instructions for asking questions and the procedure for recording the data in different years. You have a difficult situation, but do not quit, you are learning from all these difficult problems.

Holt's In Ala. Where Do I Go From here?

I'm trying to answer a question thats been lingering in my family; Was my Grandfather really a Holt? I'm new at this, and would truly be grateful for any advise on where I should go from here. - Here's what I know, and where I am. My Grandpa's name was Lawson Camiel Holt, he was born March 15 1875 in Elmore Co. Alabama. He moved Louisiana after 1900 and married Susan Jane Finklea. My Grandpa never met his grandparents, and sadly his father died, of a brain aneurysm, while helping my grandpa with his Math homework, when he was just ten yrs old. There was a mother's name in his fathers bible(which has since gone missing) However, my grandpa's mother told him, that his father wasn't raised by his parents, she couldn't remember who raised him, or whether the name in the bible was his fathers biological mother or whether she may have adopted his father, and this is all my grandfather knew. This left my grandfather wondering til the day he died, whether or not he was really a Holt. Based on my own search, I do believe he was a Holt, only there are so many, often with the same names, I'm lost as to which Holt he belongs to. I believe I've located him in a couple census records. However they are quite confusing.

Here the 1880 record states that in Buyckville Elmore Co, Ala. at the age of 4, Lawson C Holt was living with Willie Holt (abt. 1853) (head of household), his wife Bettie, their daughter Lela, and Richard Holt. Richard and Lawson's relationship to Willie (HOH) is stated as "Brother". Willie's Mothers Birthplace - Alabama, Fathers Birthplace - Georgia. Richard and Lawsons Mothers BP- Alabama, Fathers BP - Alabama. Link - http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1880usfedcen&a... The different birthplaces of the father, doesn't make sense, since they all have the same last name.

Then in 1900 there is a Lawson Holt again living with a William Holt in Elmore Co. Only here, the Wife, Birthplaces of Father and Mother, Birth dates (slightly Differ), and the relationship to head of household is "Cousin". Link - http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1900usfedcen&a...

I don't really know if this same Willie and Lawson? I couldn't find a Willie/ William married to a Bettie after 1880, and William has only been married 8 years here, so that would be plenty of time for him to remarry if he divorced or lost his wife. So it could be the same Willie? However, all of the tree's linked to the 1900 William, have him as the son of Philip Holt and Elizabeth Burkhalter. And no siblings named Richard and Lawson. Philips brothers all except one seem to have passed away before Lawsons birth. So I'm not sure he is his cousin.

So next, I did a search for Richard Holt born (abt 1867) in Alabama and Found one in a census 1870 record, Living with a Lydia Holt (alabama), (no husband given) and 4 children, the youngest being Richard.http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1870usfedcen&a...

Then In 1900 there is a T. Richard Holt, brn 1866 living very close to where Richard was in 1880. Fathers birthplace: Georgia, Mother's birthplace: Georgia. http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1900usfedcen&a...

Both of these Richards continue to live very close to other Holts in the area often sometimes next door to them and the Burkhalters and Martin's.

Another member noticed Lydia lived next door to the John and Priscilla Burkhalter and knew they had a daughter named Lydia, so I searched for Lydia Burkhalter (abt 1943), And found a marriage lic for a Lydia Buckhalter and Martin N Holt. In Georgia 1855. So I searched for Martin, and found plenty of family trees and a couple of census records. And there is a problem with Martin being there father also. Half the family trees have Martin N Holt, (abt 1825 or 1830) as son of Joseph and Nancy Holt, Husband of Lydia Burkhalter, brn in South Carolina and half have this same Martin brn in Georgia. They all have a death date before Lawson was born (before 1970) Which would make sense, since Lydia's husband doesn't appear in the 1870 census. But wouldn't ya know it. The 1960 Census has two Lydia's, the same age, one married to a Martin N Holt of (Georgia), the other married to M N Holt(S.C.) Both around the same age, in close proximity to each other "Southern Division, Coosa, Alabama". Link - http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1860usfedcenan...

M N Holt - Link -
http://search.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=View&r=an&dbid...

So I'm wondering if people have the two M N Holts confused.
So that's where I am. Lost... I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on where I should go from here, I'd really appreciate it? Also I'd like to see if i can find a birth record for him, only I'm not sure where you find birth records pre-1900 in Alabama. So if anyone has any guidance in that area, or if anyone does this and can offer assistance I'd be most grateful!!

Hi, I had family in Coffee county Ala. at this time. I wonder did your Edlow have another name, or middle name. My gggrandfather Eli had 11 sons. They were in Ala until the 1880's so there may be a connection. On the 1870 census it only lists one name for each son, but I know some had as many as three names. My grandfather was Eli William James Kerry Morris while my father was William James Alexander Morris. I know that my gggfather was listed as Enock Morris on a later census. I know this is a stretch but I haven't been able to connect with anyone.

Peter B. Alston

Searching for the ancestry of Peter B. Alston. Peter was born, per 1850 Federal Census in 1796 in SC. He moved to Halifax, NC, more than likely when he married Martha King - marriage bond dated July 14, 1819. Three sons were born in Halifax, Co.

Peter B. Alston, his wife, Martha King Alston, his sons, George W. Alston, another unknown son, and James Alston, all left Halifax, NC in about 1827 moving to Milledgeville, Baldwin Co. GA (per 1830 Federal Census - P. B. Alston). They lived there for about ten years, where daughters, Dalace, Sarah Emily and Missouri were born. In the late 1840's the family moved to Lumpkin, Stewart Co. GA (District 24, per 1840 Federal Census), living there for about 5-10 years. Their last son, Cicero Franklin Alston was born there. Before 1850 they are in Chambers Co. AL.

In the Union Recorder newspaper, Milledgeville, Baldwin Co., GA, Peter B. Alston's name was mentioned three times in the "List of Letters". This list mentioned any letter by name as they were addressed, remaining in the Post Office there for any particular individual.

For June 1833 there was a letter for "Peter B. Alston". For June 1836 there was a letter for "Peter Alston"; and October 1836, for "Peter Allston". Notice the two "L" spelling, as there were no Alston's in Baldwin Co. with this spelling, and Peter B. Alston was the only "Peter Alston" in the county with that name. This letter with the two "L" spelling, I conclude was addressed to my Peter B.

I am curious about the "Bacot" line of Allstons, and my Peter B. Alston's possible connection. In doing more research I have found in the "Prince Fredericks Parish of Winyaw", in SC, no mention of a Joseph Belin Allston, as a son of Peter Allston, Jr. and Mary Bacot. There are four children mentioned - Peter Allston, (b. 1770); Samuel Allston, (b. 1772); Sarah Jane Allston, (b. 1779); John Hayes Allston, (b. 1786).

Groves in his book "Allstons/Alstons,... etc." Has Joseph Allston, marrying a ? Belin, with sons, Samuel, (b. 1790)and Peter, (b. 1791). I believe Groves was incorrect here, as there is no record that I can find of ANY Joseph Allston, son of Peter, Jr. and Mary. In my opinion, the Samuel and Peter mentioned by Groves as sons of a Joseph Allston, is actually the two oldest sons of Peter, Jr. and Mary.

There is record of the decendants of the youngest child, John Hayes Allston, but so far I have not been able to find anything on Peter or Samuel, the two oldest sons.

Any information of the decendants of these two sons would be greatly appreciated. Quite possibly my Peter B. is somehow connected here, and is another Peter Bacot Allston, who changed the spelling when he moved to Halifax, NC back to the one "L" spelling, as this was prevalent there.

And also there are with Peter B. Alston's family very similar naming patterns with those in the "Bacot" Allston lineage. Please help if you can.

Solomon K. Murphy

I am searching for info on my G-G-Grandfather, Solomon K. Murphy. He was born March 18, 1819 somewhere in Alabama.
His father (John?) may have been born in VA. I believe Solomon's Mother may have been named Polly and that he may have had at least three siblings (Basil G., Polly and James). Solomon married Elizabeth West (daughter of Robert West & Margaret "Peggy" Sanders) on March 10, 1843 in Williamson Co IL.

I Have located Solomon in the following Federal Census records: 1850-Williamson Co IL, 1860-Cape Girardeau Co MO,
1880-Randolf Co AR and 1900-Pope Co AR.

Many of my family members (including Solomon) are buried at the white Church (Pollard) cemetery in Pope Co.

Who were Solomon's parents? Where in Alabama was Solomon born? Any info would be appreciated.

James K. Murphy

I am not sure that this Nancy belongs to this line. It would take more information on her parents. She was born in 1869, so she would have had to be a g/d or gg/d. There were several males in this line that did marry...she may be from one of their lines? I would be glad to try to help connect her to this family, but more information is needed...If you would like to share any information on this line, I am willing to help...

The Daniel WALKER? More information would be needed also to go further with him. I am searching for a Daniel WALKER that would fit this timeline...

I do have extensive records on both the McDONALD and WALKER lines from Blount Co., Al. If you would like to contact me off the list, email dbein at hotmail.com. delete the at and spaces use @, due to spammers.
Thanks for any information that you are willing to share.
