Gore surname

I am trying to locate anyone who knows more about the man named Gore mentioned in this article. I think it was in 1915.

Another killing took place in Randolph County on last Friday night. A man
named Gore called a man named Yarbrough to his door and shot him, killing him
instantly. About six years ago, Gore killed another man named Yarbrough and
was tried and convicted of murder and given a life sentence. About ten days
ago the Governor parolled Gore on the recommendation of the parole board. The
killing was the result of a feud of long standing.

Trying to find out who he was related to.

Julia,

I am also interested in the article from the Randolph Leader as I believe the two Yarbroughs who were killed by Gore are ancestors of mine. However, I can't prove it yet because I can't find out the first names of any of the men.

If you here, will you please e-mail me? cindymartinez931@hotmail.com. If I hear, I'd be happy to e-mail you. What is your e-mail address?

Is Dick Gore & Sam Gore the same person?

Thanks
Linda

Jan-1896

News comes to Wedowee that Joe Sheets was shot and killed by Sam Gore on Saturday evening last on the western border of Georgia, near the line of Randolph County. No particulars, but it is alleged that Gore claims he acted in self defense, or at least that he killed Sheets to keep from being killed himself.

Oct-1900
A shocking tragedy occurred last Thursday night just above Omaha in Lamar beat. Dick Gore, while intoxicated, shot Ben Trent, one of his neighbors, without any provocation. Trent in trying to keep Gore from shooting another man received the shot himself. The ball took effect in the bowels. It is said that Trent will not recover. Gore made his escape. We learn since that he has been captured and lodged in jail at Franklin, Georgia.

Linda,

I'm not really sure if Sam and Dick Gore are the same person. I know that one of my distant cousins told me the story of Sam Gore killing 6 or 7 men and that someone named Sheets was one of them.

I see in your message that you have Joe Sheets at Big Springs, Randolph Co. I just pulled up the cemetary records & just spoke to Jimmy Gay who keeps up the cemetary and he said there were some Sheets and Gores buried there.

The cemetary transcription shows no dates for Joe Sheets and a daughter, Frances buried (no dates) next to him. Also there are some Davis' next to them. I'm sure they are kin.

Not sure who all Sam killed but I was told that Sam Gore finally got locked up and died in prison. I'm not sure how. Not sure if he had health problems or if someone killed him.

I'm not sure about that family but I know they have to be connected to my line somehow because my g-g-grandmother was Rosa Jane Moore. Also, my g-grandmother was Martha Ann-Liza Smith and she had a brother names Archie Judge Smith. Back then, a lot of your family members were named after each other even aunts/uncles/cousins, etc... The name Archibald Judge had to have come from my g-grandmother's line but I haven't connected all of the dots yet.

Let me know if you find out if your family is related to the Smith line.

Cindy, I love finding new cousins. Your Rosa Jane MOORE was a sister of my gr-gr-grandfather, Archibald Judge MOORE (who was named after his paternal uncle, Hilliard Judge MOORE). So, I guess Rosa Jane named a son after her brother. Please e-mail me at ptm2754@bellsouth.net. I have "moore" <grin> info on our MOORE family.

Hey Pam,

Rosa Jane is my g-grandmother. Her daughter, Martha
Ann-Liza Smith was my grandmother. My mother referred to your gr-gr-grandfather as Uncle Judge.

Email me at rhoup@speedfactory.net and let's swap info.

Linda,

I don't think "Dick" and "Sam" are the same person. The Gores from this area of Randolph County had a reputation for hard drinking and generally rough behavior (sorry-- any relatives who read this. Nothing personal). Their reputation was still alive and well even when I was a child and living in the area.

The 1915 news article is somewhat incorrect. The person Sam Gore killed was not really a Yarbrough. Let me explain.

Sometime around the time of the Civil War, Frank Smith married Nancy Caroline Yarbrough. They had one son: William Endi-Olee Smith b.1868. The child was nicknamed Nolee.

Frank left to fight in the Civil War and was killed. [Yes, I know this was near the end of the Civil War, but much fighting continued in isolated pockets for quite a while after the end.]
Nancy moved back home with her parents, William Yarbrough and Ellen Gentry Yarbrough.

Being raised in the Yarbrough household, Nolee grew up being called William (Nolee) Yarbrough, though his real surname was Smith. The person Sam Gore killed in 1915 was this same person, my grandfather, William N. (Nolee) Smith.

Though my mother was only four years old, she remembered it quite well. This coward, Sam Gore, was drunk at the time. He came to the house while the family was eating supper. Mother said he was shouting and creating a loud ruckus in the road and my grandpa went to the door to see what the commotion was about. As soon as he stepped out the door onto the porch, Sam Gore shot and killed him.

Neighbors continued to confuse the Smith and Yarbrough last name even after Nolee grew up and married. After Nolee, was killed, his widow, my grandmother was often referred to as Marth [Martha] Yarbrough. The newspaper simply printed what the neighbors reported.
