Jasper Wilson and Lucinda "Alabama" Weems of Jefferson/Blount, AL

My gg-grandfather's name was Jasper Wilson. He married Lucinda "Alabama" Weems (b. abt. 1845) in 1861 in Blount Co., AL. They had 2 children: Alexander Wilson (1863-1933)and my g-grandfather,William Sherman Wilson (1865-1945). Alexander md. Sarah and had children named Lee Cotis, Cora (md Grover Cleveland Sims), Lexie, John, Alris or Arlie, William and Watie (md a Higginbotham). William Sherman's first wife's maiden name was Lucinda Wilson. While they were married. they took care of 3 children named Ethel, Oscar and Ozella Wilson. I believe these children were relatives of Lucinda. After Lucinda died, the three children seem to have left and William Sherman married Lela Josephine Bass.

My grandfather Wilson told me that he had been told that Jasper Wilson went off to fight in the Civil War and never came back. By the 1870 census, Alabama Weems Wilson, Alexander Wilson and William Sherman Wilson are living with her parents, James and Teresa Posey Weems in Jefferson Co., AL. I found an 1860 Jefferson Co., AL (Hagoods Precinct) census record that lists a William and Frances Wilson with children Jasper(16), Nancy(14), Emeline(12) and Henry(10). This is the only clue I've been able to find about who Jasper Wilson's family might have been. I can't find this family anywhere after 1860 or a marriage record for a William Wilson and Frances.

Does anyone know anything about this Wilson family? My grandfather said the Wilson family was from Pinson, AL and I know Alexander and Sarah Wilson are buried in Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery in or near Pinson.

Hi Leslee,

only recently I found your post on Robert DUDICK/DUDECK that hasn't been answered yet. A friend of mine and I are researching families of German descent in Nanticoke, PA.

Robert DUDICK/DUDECK was born February 27, 1887 in Nanticoke, PA / died October 5, 1914 in Mulga, AL (aged 27 yrs, 6 months) He was killed in a coalmine gas explosion in Mulga Mine, Mulga AL that also killed 15 other miners. He was taken back to Nanticoke for burial in the Nanticoke City Cemetery, Lot 198 (the burial permit dates from October 10, 1914).

That link has a picture of the mine: http://www.msha.gov/century/colliery/colliery.asp (Picture No.10).
The death of Robert ("Bob DUDICK") is also mentioned here:
http://bpldb.bplonline.org/db/formProc/coalmine?atNum=480
or here:
http://bpldb.bplonline.org/db/formProc/coalmine?mine=328&amp... (all links valid Nov. 2009).

Robert was the son of Christian DUDECK and Eva (KIEHL/KIEL/KEIL) DUDECK.
Christian and Eva were both born in Prussia/Germany. Christian immigrated in 1880 and Eva came over with her parents in 1874. Both seem to have been married in Easley, Pickens Co., South Carolina in the second half of 1880.

Best wishes

Matt (from Southwest Germany)

The Birmingham Library will do this for a minimal charge; think about $5.00 or so. It will probably cost more to match the index with the actual record.

If there's a glitch, let me know. I'm a volunteer preserving old Jefferson Co, AL records, and will check it for a tax deductible donation to Birmingham Genealogical Society to fund preserving old Jeffco records.

hellomlu AT bellsouth.net

Preserving old Jefferson Co, AL records - NEED HELP!

A group of 31 volunteers began about 11 years ago rescuing records in Shelby Co, AL, then moved on to Jefferson Co, AL Probate and Circuit Court records at the Birmingham court house. Filming is complete on these, and indexing soon will be.

We are considering tackling the Jefferson County records stored haphazardly in the old Bessemer, AL court house. We have dwindled to 11 people, and must have more volunteers and a reliable source of funding before we consider this project, which will take an estimated five years and $5,000.

The records will be transported by Jefferson County from Bessemer to the Jefferson County Operations Center in the Tarrant, AL area due to lack of parking near the Bessemer, AL Court House.

The work consists of removing old rusty fasteners, smoothing the pages, organizing the records in preparation for filming, and placing them in acid-free folders. If we could get a data entry person or two, that would be great.

If you can contribute two, three or more hours a week, or tax deductible funds which can be donated to Birmingham Genealogy Society specifically for this project, let me know. If anyone has ever helped you, now is a great time to pay it forward. It can sometimes be tedious, but it's more fun than tedium. You may even learn first-hand why your great-grandparents divorced.

hellomlu AT bellsouth.net
Don't know the religion of lawlor but one church in "Pratt City" was St. Catherine's. It was located at the end of Hibernia st. It had a cemetery attached to it and even tho it is now closed the records were transferred to a Catholic church in, I think, Graysville, AL.
If you can contact the chancery office of the Diocese of Birmingham in the city they may be able to give you info about where the records were transferred.
Good luck
nhsjcurran@yahoo.com

Yes & Hi,
Well Mollie was purchased by Raiford Lanier from her own father for a sack of flour and corn in Savannah, Ga. She and her father were coming thru on a covered wagan drawn by horses and Raiford took notice. After the broom jumping she never saw her family again. They have had upwards of 21 to 27 children most of which past before the age of 2.
The 1900 and 1910, 1920 federal census has her with Raiford in Bulloch, Ga.
Among her children were: Handy, Dallie, Fannie (my Grandmother), Nora, Pliney, Alma, and as well as others.
Run a search for Raiford LAnier and she is listed as his wife along with the rest of her children.
Thank You for your response. i still have Lanier family members in Staesboro, Ga.
Kimmie McIntyre Montoya
BronxKiKi@yahoo.com
PhreakDatOne2@comcast.net
267.872.5617

ON 1920 census for Tuscaloosa co. list Mattie as widow, with the following children; Joseph, Louis, Ralph, Claude, Claris(daughter). On 1930 list Mattie Herring, husband Marion Herring, with 2 Herring children:
Georgia E. Herring age 5, Marion L. Herring age 3. I believe this is Mattie Cree Pearson Herring because also list 2 of her sons named Joesph Pearson, Louis Pearson. Is the little family cemetery you mention in a backyard? I remember seeing tombstones in someone's back yard off of Old Springvill Rd around Vaughn. I don't know what family that is, not sure if they are also Bass family. Sorry I could not be more help..I've wondered about the graves in the backyard, so if you find out, please let me know who is buried there.
