Owen, Alabama is actually Northeast, rather than Northwest of Atmore. There is no town by that name, but it encompasses the area of Stanley Crossroads, Magnolia, Pineview, and areas to the north of Flomaton. Most of my ancestors and family are in that area still, and when you look at the census, it lists all of this area as Owen. It is the area of Township 2 North, Range 7/8 East. Sometimes, you'll see Owen on the census of Conecuh or Baldwin Counties as well, because before 1869, land East of Highway 113 was Conecuh County, and land West of 113 was Baldwin County.

agavegirl,
I went to the library today and found the Dollarhide book of US Census boundaries.
I sorry to say that I am apparently wrong---it appears that Pollard was WELL INTO Conecuh Co, before Escambia was formed.

The North/South dividing line between Baldwin and Conecuh was quite a ways WEST of Pollard.

Any other questions I could help you with??

ERS,
Pensacola, FL
Sorry for the earlier error.

Escambia Co was formed in Dec of 1868, from Baldwin
Co on the West, and Conecuh Co on the East.
My own relatives were near Foshee, north of Pollard
and I have found them in the 1860 Baldwin Co census.

I would guess, therefore, that it is likely Baldwin, but
not 100% sure where the Conecuh line actually was.
You may need a Dollarhide book to see the boundqaries
of the 1860 and 1870 lines--there is one in the
Pensacola City Library, and I will go there probably
on Friday.

ERS, Pensacola

Hello,

Francis H. Gray and Fanny Isabella Gray were my great grandparents on my father's side. I think they were married in Butler County, Ala., but I am not sure of that. I have not been able to find a marriage certificate for them. Are they ancestors of yours?

I have some information on them and would be happy to share it.

I was born in Brewton, Ala. (Escambia County). Now live in Pace, about 40 miles south of Brewton.

Luther Golden
lvgolden@mchsi.com

Hello there; I am Sammy Simmons and have been researching the Hammac and Simmons line of my family. I have a good bit of info. on the Hammacs, but did not see any names that jumped out at me in your query. My Grandfather, Samuel Riley Simmons was a stepson to Robert Hammac. Robert married my Grandmother, Frances, and they raised Samuel and later had a daughter named Laura Frances Hammac who married a John Elbert Beal, moved to Pensacola and raised a large family down there. If there is anyone in particular you want to know about let me know and I will try to help you find them. I have been to several cemetaries that have Hammacs buried in them, but there is one that is very, very old, I was told, and I haven't been there yet. The ones you want to know about may be there. I have some more listed that you might be interested in. I have been to one on Hammac Road near Foshiee and there are only about 3-4 that can still be read. There are supposed to be 18 graves there but it has grown up and most of them cannot be found.I have a list of them as well as some other listings that you might find hepful. You can email me at; ssimmons@panhandle.rr.com if you wish to correspond with me.

Hey Joan,
I don't know if you remember me or not, but I think I have talked to you before and gotten some info from you. My grandmother was Lula Mae White who married Charles Bradley Boone. Charles was the son of William Boone who was the son of Elijah Boone son of John Jarvis Boon SR. I have been to the Lindsey Cemetery and listed all the Boones that had headstones. I was wondering if you knew of any other boones buried there without headstones. I have been to several cemeteries around the area and didn't find very many Boones.
I grew up in Atmore and lived on Jack Springs Road. In fact, there is something in my genealogy about Jack Springs and my great-grandfather. I would venture to say it was named after him but I would have to look back on the info that I have about that since it has been a while since I have read it. My grandparents also lived in Huxford. I have a cousin in Atmore that said he would find out about Owen and Jack Springs for me. I will pass the info on when he gives it to me. Wish I could help.
Susie Keller Newman

Owen appears to have been a small community within the area of "Jack Springs" in Escambia County, Alabama. Escambia was formed in 1868 from parts of Baldwin and Conecuh counties, and my best guess is that it was formerly part of Conecuh based on my family's history.

My relatives are enumerated as Jack Springs in 1900/1910, then Owen in 1920, and then Jack Springs again in 1930. The actual location of my family at the time of all of these census records is an area now called Huxford, which is a small community West of Atmore (mailing addresses are Atmore). I recently asked one of my Huxford relatives if she had ever heard of Jack Springs, and having lived there all her life, had never heard of the location. I did not ask about Owen.

Hope that helps!

According to http://www.doc.state.al.us/history.asp

"On March 13, 1928, a 3,600 acre farm in Escambia County was purchased and Moffett State Farm was built to receive the final movement of convicts from the mines on June 30, 1928. Similar to road camp construction, Moffett had wood-framed barracks with concrete foundations with baths and toilets on each wing. More land was purchased for a total of 8,360 acres, and Moffett, also referred to as the Atmore Prison Farm, became a demonstration farm for the state. Buildings were also constructed for the wardens and guards; a cold storage plant, a canning plant, and a 42 mile railroad. The total cost of Moffett State Farm was $452,544.90 with a capacity of 850 convicts. Provisions were also made for showing movies, radios, baseball and football outfits, and other amusement/recreation facilities."

Hope this helps
