Is there a chance of getting a scanned copy of those photos?
Many of those surnames are in my family tree.
I published a book a few years ago on my family and plan on a 2nd edition in the future. Those photos would be great to add to the next edition. Email me please!
Thanks

Have you checked the "Family Trees" at the top of this page to see if anything is listed for him. Of course since you will get a lot of listing it would help if you knew what the "B" stood for.

Also have you tried the LDS Family History site? Use the full search at the top of page and it will even search the 1880 census along with other files.

Have you checked the surname boards? They have a search engine at the top of the page.

Have you checked algenweb archives for information? They even have search engines.

Have you checked cyndislist.com which has tons of information and I believe there are message sites also.

I insert this information for "Newby's" at research that may come across this post so they get the correct information on researching.

Just make sure you recheck any of the information you find at these sites as anyone is allowed to post to genealogy sites and they may copy from someone else and the information may not be correct, or they may have people connected to the wrong family with wrong ages, wrong births and wrong deaths.
Make sure you check any transcribed census you find anywhere online with the actual hard copy or scanned copy due to mistakes easily made on transcriptions.

There is another Alabama research site that covers all of Alabama with lots of information, but right now my mind has gone blank and I can't even remember the site name. When you go to that site the first page will come up a vivid blue and the owner is a Nurse by Profession but I just cannot remember the name. I have the site saved to my "Favorites" but wouldn't you know my favorites hasn't worked for 3 days now.

Hope some of this helps.

I thought James & family went to Escambia, at least that's what I have in my tree file. hmmmmm, might need to revisit that one too..

There was a story that my Henry Simmons was found @ River Falls, near Andalusia, then taken to live with this Batson/Simmons family. He then went to live with the Wards in Dale County before going to Florida after the civil war. I have never found any proof outside of this story.

I guess you are referring to James, the son of Mary? James was supposed to have ended up in Andalushia (spelling) Alabama. Simmons Street there was named after our Simmons family. Have you looked in that area? John

yes, John we have been in touch several times before. I suppose it is possible they joined the military and disappeared that way. But all three?? and their mother. odd if you ask me. I cannot find them listed in any civil war records. Also, James Simmons used their first names in naming his boys. Mary could have remarried I suppose, or she got sick & died.

My family has been trying for years to find out about my grand fathers mother. She died when he was born (April 12, 1903) and my grand fathers name was Collie Morris.

Emma Boykin was married to William Morris in 1889 and she was born in 1872.

We have been trying to find where she may be buried. She was born in Coffee County, Alabama but after she was marred to my G-grandfather they resided in Dale County, Alabama.

The records I have found on this site shows here first name before marriage as Isabell but the 1900 Census shows her first name as emma. Her maiden name was Boykin and her married name was Morris.

Any help would be grateful.

Regards,
Scott

There were no Indian Reservations in Dale Co., AL during the 1940's, but there was a big US Army Base built there about 1942 called Camp Rucker ... Now it's called Fort Rucker and is a large helicopter training base .. A lot of Dale Co. land was taken for the military reservation that surrounds this base.

Initially, Camp Rucker was used to train the US Army's 81st
Infantry "Wildcat" Division.. They saw a lot of service in the south Pacific during WW2 ...

There is a small reservation of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians near Atmore in Escambia County, AL .. In 2006 they had about 1000 members ...

Bill Huggins

This is a re-post of a posting from 2001. I have a new address and may have missed any replies to the original. The original post is as follows:
I have several old photos that might be of interest to some Dale Co researchers. I estimate they were taken around 1910. One is of a family named HERRING. On the back of the original was written "Mrs. Herring and family, living on the Robertson place, Grimes, Ala - Neighbors". They must have been neigbors to my GF Moses Jeter BALDWIN. Another is of the family of John and Joan BABSTON. I believe Joan to be a half sister to Charles P. BRANNAN. Writing on back indicated the photo may have been taken in Texas. Another is a school group photo with my uncles B. C. and Moses Shofner BALDWIN and aunt Ida BALDWIN identified along with Wilmer DOMINY and Miss Willie ADAMS. Wilmer and Miss Willie appear to be teachers. Another is identified as a group picture of students at Lewis School at Christian Hill. Those identified are Lem SNELL, Foster PRESTON, and uncles B. C. and Moses Shofner BALDWIN. Another is a large group of people, either a family or maybe a church group, with B. C. , Moses Shofner and Ida BALDWIN identified along with Zina HERRING. The oldest photo is a copy of an old tin type dated 1891. It is a photo of Charles Paschal BRANNAN and Laney Woodham BRANNAN with daughters Piety Alice and Rebecca Allie. Also in the picture is Pricilla WOODHAM, an adopted niece of Laney. There is also a BALDWIN family group photo that includes Van HELMS. If anyone is interested please contact me at mbaldwin001@centurytel.net
My Dale county ancestors are BALDWIN, BRANNAN, JUDAH, and WOODHAM.

Mike BALDWIN

Martha A. Brewer - Barnes

I am absolutely stumped on Martha A. Brewer-Barnes and was hoping someone could help! She was born in 1832 in either GA or AL (depends on which census you look at). She married Josiah Barnes in 1855 in AL. She died 26 Dec 1914 and is buried in Geneva Co., after living the majority of her life in Dale Co.

I cannot find her birthdate, or confirm where she was born. And I cannot locate her parents or siblings. I know a lot about her life after she married Josiah, but absolutely nothing about her life before then. Actually, I do not even have her exact marriage date or location. I suspect Dale Co., but those records were lost in the 1880's.

If anyone has any information about Martha A. Brewer - Barnes before 1855, I would sincerely appreciate it!

Betty,
Thank you for responding!
Because they are not listed in the Dale Co. Cemetery Book, I might just have to wander around that beat 7 area!

For Josiah Sr.'s children, who do you have as passing in Dale and who in Marlin? I have a few differences:
John - unknown to me
Stephen - Walker Co, TX (about 2 hrs from Marlin, TX)
Sarah - Henry Co, AL
Jesse - Dale Co.
Elizabeth - LA
Josiah - unconfirmed, but I have to believe Dale Co
William - Covington Co, AL
Rebecca - NY

Thank you!

Josiah Sr. was living in Ozark, Beat 7, Dale Co, AL in 1870. He was 72 years old then. He was living with a Martha Barnes, w/f/37 and children; Mary 8yoa, Eddie 6yoa; Ollie 3yoa and Woodard 1yoa.
In 1860, Josiah Sr. and Rebecca were living in same area with Josiah Jr.in household. It's very possible that Martha is Josiah Jr's wife and that the kids are his. Time frame for Rebecca passing and then Josiah Jr passing are about right. I would imagine they are all buried in a cemetery very close to Ozark, Beat 7. Also not sure where Josiah and Rebecca's other 5 boys and 2 girls are buried, but 3 passed in Dale Co, AL and 1 in Marlin Falls, TX. Hope this helps narrow your search!
Betty

Thank you so much for the reply!

I was able to confirm what you sent with what I have too. I have requested lookups of the records at the county library (too soon to be kept, or not there). I think AL is a state that did not require records to be kept until after 1900.

When I was matched with someone in Random Acts of Genea. Kindness, he referred me to the Dale Co. Cemetery book, which is a great resource, but unfortunately neither men are listed!

I will check the AL usgwarchives website and see if anything comes up.

Thanks again!

According to census info his father and mother were born in GA. Have you had DNA completed on any of your male relatives? There was also the spelling of Mathias for some my possible relatives.

Ellen, I have seen this individual before (African American) and am intrigued by the "coincidence" of such an unusual name. The census data I have on our Burrell Milton Matthews and his father James Burch Matthews shows no slaves. James B. was born in NC in 1814, and apparently moved directly to Alabama, as the later children were born there. I wonder if there is a tie to the earlier generations? Have you seen any Cain or Hicks last names? (A Burrel Cain or Hicks may have been taken in by an earlier Matthews family)

Family was shown in Dothan, Houston Co., AL, in 1920 Census (with children Marjorie A.(b. 1916) and Harry Jr., (b. abt 1920); in the 1930 Census, Miami, Dade Co., FL. However, only 14 year old Majorie was shown with the family in FL. It appears that parents and Marjorie lived out their lives in FL, but what happened to Harry Jr.?

I found the civil war records of James Cotton on Footnote. It says he was in the cavalry and transferred to 33rd AL unfantry. They showed he was owed for use of horse and saddle. No records are shown as to cavalry he was with. Perhaps, an in depth review of the history of Alabama units will show if a cavalry unit was dissolved at the time. The last record is 1864 at Dalton, Ga with the 33rd.

The 1866 Alabama state census confirms what I had thought, he was killed in the war. Dale Co. schedule 1 shows A. W. Cotten has one family member killed in the war. All his children except James are accounted for after the war. The next entry is for Turcy Cotten with two young girls and one family member was killed in the war. She was the wife of James Cotton in 1860. So the family member killed in Turcy's family and the one killed in the family of A.W. are probably the same and are the James Cotton I am looking for.

This is what I had thought and it is fairly good confirmation.

Thank you. I have Irene Ezell's death certificate and had found James as the son of Frances. I had not found J.H. Ezell on find-a-grave but, now have that info.

Irene is shown in the 1870 census in the household of A. W. Cotton and in 1880 is shown as his grand daughter. I believe Irene's death certificate is in error. The person who provided the information was not from Alabam and could have known the family only in Texas. Avent W. Cotton's son John is probably not her father. As I said, he had a son who wrote the family history and he did not mention a sister named Irene or any sister in Alabama. John Cotton went from a prison camp in Illinois to Colorado during the war. I feel sure he is not her father.

The records of John W. Cotton, the son of Avent are well-recorded on Footnote. It has his record in the POW camp at Camp douglas and the fact that he joined the 5th US Vols for service in the west.

James Cotton was in a cavalry unit, one record says dismounted cavalry. Another record says he was owed for his horse and saddle. He was transferred to the 33rd AL infantry. No records can be found after 1864.

I am helping an African American friend whose GGGrandfather was named Burrell Mathis/Matthews. He was born in Alabama in 1866 and his father is listed as born in Georgia. He eventually ended up in Texas where in married in 1897. My friend has learned that families migrated to Texas during the Civil War in order keep their slaves a little longer. She wonders if that happened with your families and if they migrated with their slaves. I realize this is a long shot, but we are stuck, as we can only find this person in the 1910 census in Oklahoma and the 1930 census in Kansas.

JW53,
I am the decendent of John Stanson Jones. Narcissus Trawick was his 2nd wife per this info: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/o/l/d/Ronnie-M-Ol...
James Lawson was my GGF and was John Stanson's son from wife (1st ?) Martha and became a Primitive Baptist Preacher after moving to Texas per: http://www.primitivebaptist.info/mambo/pdfs/PREACHER_BIOGRAP...

I also found info on the 1850 census of Dale Co AL showing a John R. Jones, wife Martha and 1 yr old male James L. I think that "R" may be a typo but haven't looked through the scanned documents to try to see if I can verify.

My father, J.L. Jones, was named after his GF. His sister has been doing geneology since I was in elementary school and has collected a lot of info on her mother's side of the family but hasn't been able to go further than John Stanson. IF you have info that his father was John Lawson that is great and gives me a place to continue.

The story I was told was that in 1908 he (John S.) rode horseback from Mason Tx to Oklahoma where his daughter Francis Narcissus (Jones) Hogue lived. He caught pnuemonia, died and is buried there.

Hope your search for ancestors is successful,
Mel Jones, TX

James Cotton, son of Avent

James H. Ezell born 1861 probably in Coffee or Dale Co., AL and died in Shelby Co., Tx in 1923. I have been unable to find a death certificate. I don't think he had any children. The family says they adopted a child. A Violet A. K. appears in the family in 1920 in Shelby Co., Tx.

His wife was Irene Cotton who died Feb 20, 1938 in Tx and was born in Dale Co., AL on Dec. 21, 1867. I believe she was the daughter of James Cotton. She was in the household of Avent Cotton in Dale Co., AL in 1870 and 1880. Her death certificate says she was the daughter of John Cotton and M. Whitton. The information for the death certificate was given by a person who didn't know them until they moved to Texas so I wonder if that is incorrect. Avent Cotton had a son John who never returned to Alabama after the civil war. His son, Bennie Albert Cotten, wrote a book on the family and does not mention her. Avent had a son, James, who I believe is her father.

Any information on a Whitton/Whiddon connection to the Cotton family or any info on the Ezells of Dale Co., AL or Shelby Co., Tx would be appreciated.

Anything on James, son of Avent Cotton, who died during the war?

I looked in the Dale County records today and did not find anyone by that name. I am also researching the Walker line and knew that there were a lot of Walker's in Houston and Geneva County. I didn't find that name in there either. I also looked in Coffee County with no luck. Sorry I could not find anything

Lil,
Here's the marriage records for Alex McCall's two marriages as someone may be looking for them.

Marriage Licenses Dale Co. Could you please do the lookup for him in the 1910 census?

I do remember seeing a civil war list with one of those names on it several years ago, but never did think to get someone to do a census lookup at that time.

I do appreciate your help.
