There were no Indian Reservations in
Dale Co., AL during the 1940's, but there was a big US
Army Base built there about 1942 called Camp
Rucker ... Now it's called
Fort Rucker and is a large helicopter training base .. A lot of
Dale Co. land was taken for the military reservation that surrounds this base.
Initially, Camp
Rucker was used to train the US Army's 81st
Infantry "
Wildcat" Division.. They saw a lot of service in the south
Pacific during WW2 ...
There is a small reservation of the
Poarch Band of
Creek Indians near
Atmore in
Escambia County,
AL .. In 2006 they had about 1000 members ...
