Bryant Johnson & wife Sarah Johnson, Covington, AL & Walton, FL

Find Bryant Johnson on the 1850 and 1860 Covington County, AL censuses:

Byrant - born about 1815 GA
Sarah - born about 1820 GA
Josiah N. - born about 1834 GA
Martha E. - born about 1838 GA
George W. - born about 1842 GA
Elizabeth - born about 1844 GA
Micajah - born about 1845 GA
Melissa Ann - born about 1848 GA
Sarah - born about 1850 AL
John H. - born about 1853 AL
Susan A. - born about 1855 AL
Samuel H. - born about 1860 AL

Find the widow Sarah Johnson on the 1870 and 1880 Walton County, FL censuses.

I can deduce that Melissa married Thomas Miller and she died in Walton County in Jan. 1923 and buried at Cluster Springs.

John H. married Mary Frances ?? and he died 1914 in Walton County.

Samuel H. maried Mary J. Truett. He died Jan. 3, 1930 in Gadsden County, FL, but buried in Defuniak Springs, Walton County.

On the 1850 census, Bryant Johnson is only a few households away from William and Polly Johnson, whom I feel sure are my ggg-grandparents and are possibly the parents of Bryant.

Would love to hear from anyone researching this family.

Now be careful, for there is another Bryant Johnson born about 1809 NC on the 1850 Early County, GA census & the 1860 & 1880 Conecuh County, AL census & on the 1870 Santa Rosa County, FL census, who also has a son named Micajah born about 1851 GA. This 2nd Bryant, about the same age, son with same name, and living in roughly the same area, led me on a WILD goose chase for a while. Would make you think that somehow the 2 Bryants are connected....

Blessings,

Ken Johnson

No mention on Melissas death and my father never mentioned him. His grand father was Lodrick Teel
1754 - 1867 burried in talapossa county. alabama.

I am looking for the family of my grandfather John William Calhoun b. 1886. He was born in Coffee County Alabama and lived in Elba, Opp, Victoria, Deanville, and Mobile Alabama. I have located one record (WWI draft registration card). He is listed as married with 7 children and 30 years old. He was married to Esther Kendricks b. 1888 in Alabama. There were several brothers who also registered at the same time James C. b. 1880, John William b.1886, Thomas b. 1887, Monroe 1888, John b. 1889, Alto Daniel b. 1898, & Ambros Powell b. 1900. There was also a census which listed the younger brothers with a brother named Shelby b. 1902 and a sister Fannie b.1898. The family was living with their mother, Julia or July, and their father James J Calhoun in Deanville, Coffee Cty. Alabama in 1910 and 1920..

Thanks,

Debra Calhoun Polster
found information in the Pike County, Al library about Abraham Raley..and I believe that this is the son of Abraham Raley in Covington County. This lists the children of Milton Barnes, from Red Level Alabama..one of the girls: Amanda E., born 1855, married Abraham Raley. I believe her middle name was "Estelle" and that she married Joseph Abraham Raley, son of Abraham Raley and Elizabeth Jones. Another Milton Barnes children : Sidney, married Elizabeth C. Raley, another Newton A.Barnes married Sara Ann Henderson(they went to Texas) and Margaret Barnes married John Henley.

All of this makes sense..the Raley's and the Kilpatricks were connected and the older kilpatricks married into the HENDERSON family..and I have a picture of NEWT Barnes with one of my Kilpatricks taken in Texas.

I received Granny Lucy's (Kitty's daughter) death certificate today which confirmed Bud Coon and Kitty Lee Hancock as her parents.
FYI, I had been told that Lucy died from a bedsore which left questions in my mind. However, the death certificate pretty much confirmed that info. Cause of death: arthritis and sepsis. To me, that translates to blood poison from bed sore (Mizell Memorial). Sad, very sad! I do miss her...she was a very good granny! :-}

This is probably too late, but didn't see it till now, sorry. One of the Shilohs (not the one near Florala but the one that is T5N R16E S23) is near Straughn School on a dirt road. I think the old stone block church building (what is left of it) was Baptist. Me and my little girl rode by there back a few months ago and it was in terrible shape and the cemetary was very grown up. I can't remember if the churh was still in use when I was a child or not, but it seems like it was. Also seems like some family use to have reunions there. Acording to the listing for it on Tracking your Roots, the last burial was about 1962. The one near Florala I know nothing of.
Yes that is where it is. At the front of the school there is a row of houses. It is about the 4th one down, back in a pasture behind the house. I had to stop and ask a young boy to show it to me....do not know whose land that is. Trees growning all up in cemetery, but there is a fence around it---chain link. Dogs could get through, but I could not. Curtis Thomasson at the Andalusia paper says he has a list of who is buried there. I have not been able to get it. But found on internet that my Robbins relative and Bradleys are buried there.

I am trying to place where this is in my head and not doing a good job. I have lived close by all my life and never knew this cemetery was there. Is the pasture you are refering to behind about 4 houses across where 57 runs into the Straughn School rd.? If it is, I know who owns it and will ask about it. Also, I don't know who you talked to at the church, but if it was a woman in a her early 30's, that was the former pastor. We have a new pastor now.

We will see what we can do as soon as the weather gets a little cooler and the vegetation dies down some. I want to get in there and take pictures. Some of Sarah F. Green's children are buried there and Jonathan Jackson Harrelson. Do you know that I lived within walking distance of that cemetery..went to Straughn from the 1st to the 12th..and never knew that cemetery was there until I started doing genealogy? I don't know who owns the land there..when we went there, there was a very nice man who had horses in the pasture that the cemetery was in and he let us drive through to the cemetery. We SAID we were going back to clean it up..but you know how that is..we never did..that was about two or three years ago.

I live in Georgia and have had by pass surgery since I wrote that message!
I would be willing to give $100 toward helping clean it up. It is my
understanding that it is the Bradley cemetery and that there are none of them around. (Nor any of my Robbins clan from that area.)
I tried to get that big church in Straughn to take it on, but no luck there also. Finding someone to be responsible for it would be the problem....don't know whose land it is. The historical society has older
members who cannot do it either...but they may be willing to get the judge to help. Ask Curtis Thomasson at the Andalusia paper what he thinks...this is his last email I have :
Thomasson, Curtis (Andalusia...
E-mail Address(es):
cthomasson@centurytel.net
thanks for your interest.
Connie, I have been in the cemetery twice..fighting briars and spiders. I too, want to clean it up. Someone suggested that we go to probate court and get the cemetery put in someone's name that would be responsible for keeping it clean. There needs to be a direct access to it, besides having to go through people's yard to get there. The people who live there now have two big dogs..I don't even want to get out to knock on the door. Should see if who ever owns that big pasture close to the house would allow a path through the pasture to the cemetery. I am willingly to help clean it up..just let me know.

Good detective work there Sherry, I will change my files to reflect that "Bud's" wife was Kitty Lee Hancock.
Now, I have tried to find Kitty on the 1900 census, she would have been in her mother or father's HH but I can't find any Hancock families in Covington County on that census.
However, the 1910 Covington County census does show a widowed Mollie Hancock, age 63, born in GA. She was living with a 31 year old daughter named Bertha Hattaway. They were living next to Archie W. McPherson & his wife Melvina Coon and next to them lived Henry Coon and wife Nancy (my line). Bud's father Isaac Gideon Coon was a brother of Henry Coon.
BTW, I guess you know that Isaac Gideon had a twin brother named Simeon Travis Coon?
Then on the 1920 Covington census Mollie's daughter Bertha is married to a man over twice her age named John Newby (John Newby is often found near the Coon family on the censuses). Anyway, what I'm getting at is that Mollie Hancock might be Kitty's mother. If you find out anything more I would appreciate the information.
Thank you very much for the info you provided. Just a couple of days ago I discovered a document at trackingyourroots.com that seems to have answered one of my questions. Covington County, Alabama Marriages Volume A (1895-1905) shows on page 232 a marriage between S. Coon (would be Isaac Simion Coon) and Kitty Lee Hancock on January 20, 1901. Yippee...finally a document that shows her maiden name! I'm still digging for more info on her family but I feel like I just struck gold!

My half-sister's grandmother was Carrie Diamond..she married Burnice Williams in Jay, Florida. Carrie's parents were John Allen Diamond and Cordelia Penton. My sister said she was told that Carrie was full-blooded Choctaw. Burnice and Carrie moved to Rose Hill and they had a son, Maurice Q. Williams..this is my half sister's father. Maurice, Carrie, and Burnice are suppose to be buried in Mobile. I am searching for Maurice's date of death. We "think" it was in 1960, at the veteran's hospital in Biloxi. If you have info on this family..please share.

First, where in Texas did they go? Then when they came back from there, where did they settle? I imagine you will find several families from SE AL and NW FL who went to Texas between the end of the civil war and 1900.
I do not know. A quick search on ancestry.com census records shows only two Mary Turbevilles that might fit based on her birth date. Both are in Marion, SC and many Covington County folks came from Marion, SC.

1850 United States Federal Census
about Mary Turbeville
Name: Mary Turbeville
Age: 47
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1803
Birth Place: Marion
Gender: Female
Home in 1850(City,County,State): Marion, South Carolina
Household Members: Name Age
William Turbeville 32
Mary Turbeville 47
Robert Turbeville 11

1860 United States Federal Census
about Mary Turbeville
Name: Mary Turbeville
Age in 1860: 59
Birth Year: abt 1801
Birthplace: South Carolina
Home in 1860: Marion, Marion, South Carolina
Gender: Female
Post Office: Marion
Value of real estate: View image
Household Members: Name Age
Wm Turbeville 40
Mary Turbeville 59
Rachael Ammons 29
Allen Swipes 28

I could not find her in 1870 or 1880 so this is a long shot.

Bob
Don't know if I can help or just add to the confusion.....
(was Bud's wife's maiden name Raley, as my records show or Hancock, as your records show?)...
Most of my information is from other researchers but some is my own research and I am not good at noting exactly where each piece of my information came from.
That being said, my COON files show the following info:
Isaac Simeon "Bud" Coon (5th son of Isaac Gideon Coon & Elizabeth “Betts” Hattaway) was b. 07 Jun 1880 - d. aft 1930 (on 1930 census). The 1900 census shows Isaac was born in Jun 1881.
m. abt 1901 (per 1910 census)
m. Martha Lee "Kitty" Raley - b. abt 1881 AL - d. aft 1930 (on census)
“Bud” and “Kitty" are buried in Cool Springs Cemetery, Opp, Covington Co., AL
11/17/05 - WW1 draft record shows a Isaac Simion Coon, age 38 of Opp, AL - b. 07 Jun 1880 - self farmer - nearest relative: Kittie Lee Coon of Opp, AL
made his X - medium height - medium build - brown eyes - light hair - Registered 12 Sep 1918

Children (8 per census records) of Isaac Simeon "Bud" Coon & Martha Lee "Kitty" Raley:
1. Lula V. Coon - b. abt 1903 (1910 census)
2. Lucy E. Coon - b. abt 1905 (1910 census)
3. Elizabeth Lee "Lizzie" Coon - b. abt 1907 (1910 census)
4. Harlan J. Coon - b. 24 Apr 1909 - d. 28 Sep 1995
5. Ruby Irene Coon - b. abt 1912 (1920 census)
6. Woodrow Coon - b. abt 1918 (1920 census)
7. Ather Coon (son) - b. abt 1920 (1930 census)
8. Nathan Coon - b. abt 1924 (1930 census)

This family was in Covington Co., AL on the 1910 & 1920 census but are in Montgomery Co., AL on the 1930 census (working in the cotton mill there).
Please let me know if my information is wrong and I would also appreciate it if you could add any information.
Does anyone have any info. on "Bud's" wife Kitty or Kittie Lee Hancock. They both are buried in nearly unmarked plots at Cool Springs in Opp. I have obtained his death certificate but it created more questions than it answered. They were the parents of Lucy Coon who married John Taylor "Fox" Edgar. Fox and Lucy were the parents of my father (William) David Edgar.
Also, does anyone know where dad might have gone to school? It seems that he grew up in the Onycha(?) Horn Hill areas but I dunno. His childhood is a complete mystery to me and this saddens me greatly! FYI, dad was first married to Sharron Lloyd and later to Helon Morgan Thompson Woodyard.
