That's a possibility.
I have seen a Jacob Zuckerloff birth record on Ancestry but have no access to it. (I'm in Australia)
It's possible he or his parents were Jewish, perhaps from Russia, or the Baltic States. If he is the child of Jewish immigrants into the US, they frequently changed their names to resist the draft in their countries of origin.
Surely he would have a US service record if he served in WWII.
You are so kind...thankyou.

I agree, the name spelling has changed. That's the only explanation for this odd situation.
When a marriage record comes from the UK it's not a copy of the original. It's all written in a record keepers hand.
But the Suckerloff name is spelled that way on the ships records as well. It's possible that it is the original spelling of the name and he chose to use it for these legal purposes.
I'm thinking that the 1920 census record that you refer to might be accurate. Jake was born around 1914 in the US and his father's name was Samuel. Worth investigating.
I think I will upgrade my membership to find out.
Thanks so much for your help.

Clearly the spelling of the surname must be off, or was changed at some point. I wonder, do you see his signature on the marriage record, and does it look like Suckerloff?

There is a surname Sokoloff, Sokolof, and on the social security death index there are some Sylvia Sokoloff names.

This may be of no help, but on the 1920 census in New York, there is a Samuel Sokoloff 26 from Ukraine, wife is Francis 27 Ukraine, Jacob 6 NY, Abraham 1 yr 8 mos. NY.
But I still could not find any further info on this family for certain that would help you to determine if there was a connection.

This is a bit of a long shot.
I am trying to find out why my Great Grandmother Winifed went to America in 1895. It was only a visit, she returned to Limerick or Tipperary to my my G.Grandfather Thomas Duhig around 1903.
She sailed on the Teutonic from Liverpool England arriving on the 4th April 1895. Ellis Island.

There were 2 others on the ship from Emly Co.Tipperary
Ellen Buckley aged 17
Hannah Riordan 28

I have no idea if they have a conection to her. But I would really like to know what she was doing on this trip. She did have a sister who had/would eventually emigrate to the USA.
Any help that can be given would be wonderful
Lesley

Joyce, well, you were right. My 3x grt grandfather was James Cahoon, not James Calhoun. And my 2x grt grandfather, who changed the name to Calhoun (perhaps at the suggestion of his wife Mary Elizabeth Marsh, a 7th Day Adventist and strict), actually had a twin brother named Samuel.

James Cahoon, 1798-1880 and Nancy Dutton, 1803-1870 had 7 children who survived infancy: William Henry b. 1823, Joel Dutton b. 08 Jan 1827, James Alson b. 24 Nov 1829, John N and Samuel Newell both b. 12 Apr 1834, Benjamin Franklin b. 1840 and Mary A b. 12 Apr 1843. All were born in New York and Joel, James, John and Samuel were born in Cattaraugus County. I have actually located images of the tombstones of James Alson and Samuel Newell outside of Elmore, Minnesota. Hope to pay them a visit this spring.

John N's death record had listed his mother as Nancy Nichols. As it turns out, her mother was Margaret Nichols but what I found on Ancestry is a long line of Duttons going back to England. The Nichols line goes back to Northern Ireland.

What then of James Cahoon? Who were HIS parents? Was he actually born in Canada or in New York? And is the family legend that the Calhoun line is Scotch Irish actually true? Those are the questions I will pursue at this point. Thanks again Joyce.

Mike, glad to be of help. Good to see that you understand the chaning of the names and your suggestion of the reasons sounds plausable.
continue looking. If you run out on James, so "sideways" as I call it... the children, their spouses. Often times the person is found hidden with children in records.
good to know you are not giving up or arguing about the findings. Often times I have had people fight me and tell me I am crazy of the findings. Then, later on often times, months later, they come back and realize I was right all along. If you get stuck, shoot me off an email with your questions at
Joyce1812va@yahoo.com

That record is for someone born in New York City in 1900. I still haven't found anything even close to that name in voters records or directories. There aren't any names that match from military records. Would you know if his parents are listed on the marriage license? Did the family ever hear anything at all from her after the marriage?

I have a copy of the marriage certificate and the Suckerloff father is listed as "Sam Suckerloff, journeyman tailor and cutter". and the Jake Suckerloff professsion is listed as "Shipping clerk - Electric Lamp manufacturers."
He was 37 years old which makes him born around 1914.
So strange that he should arrive in the UK.. Jan 26 (the address he gives on the ship is the same as her home address), marry (15 March) and leave (April 6) the country in such a hurry.
Talk about a whirlwind romance!
I'm in the process of investigating his other UK address attached to the certificate but suspect it is a boarding house.

This is the oddest thing I've ever seen. No social security, census, directory/phone book, California records, birth or death, nothing with this name besides the few immigration and marriage records for England. No matches for this surname as a wildcard search back to 1910. It's like they dropped off the face of the earth and he never existed before he showed up in England. I have no explanation for this whatsoever. Even Google has no hints for this surname at all. Oddest thing ever.

Looking for info on Hauan's

I am looking for a birth year, death year, name of spouse and legal name for a Martin Hauan. Since I can't seem to find anything for this name i'm guessing it is not his full given name. This is the info I have: he was born in Norway, most likely Trondheim, he had four siblings: William, Bella, Johanne and Gunda. I know of only one child of his my great grandfather Harold M. Hanan of Illinois. My guess is that he was born around 1855..or thereabouts.

McCormick - Ireland to New York to Illinois to Texas

My email address is oarnold1022@att.net I have McCormick/McCormack in my family line. My paternal Grandmother was a Murphy. Her mother was a McCormick.
Info I have to date, 20 plus years of it.
My Gr-Grandmother McCormick was Margarett Jane McCormick, b. 1866 in Illinois. She was d/o Hugh McCormick and Mary J. Ferrell.
Hugh McCormick is the bottleneck. Per family history accounts, he was born in Ireland in about 1832. He came to the United States when he was young. Most accounts say he was less than 5 years old. The ship he was on came to the Port of New York. He had left Ireland with his family, his parents, a brother and a sister. The parents died on the voyage over and the 3 children were left orphaned when they arrived. They went to a foster home? Hugh was taken in by a family, they did not take his brother and sister, he never saw them again. This family, name not given, moved West perhaps 1st to Pennsylvania then to Illinois. I have been unable to find Hugh in 1850 or 1860 (census) in New York, Penn, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois or other.
Family history says Hugh married an unknown person after 1850. He had 3 sons, John, b. 1855, Hugh Jr. b. 1858 and Edward b. 1860 with this 1st wife. She died, they divorced or something after 1860.
He remarried to a woman from Indiana named Mary J. Ferrell. Marriage date 1865. Their 1st child was born in Illinois in 1866. This was Margarett Jane McCormick.
In the 1870 census for St. Clair county Illinois, French Village township there is listed:
Hugh Mccormack, age 36, b. Ireland, farmer
Mary J., wife, age 28, b. Indiana
John McCormack, age 15, b. Pennsylvania
Hugh " , age 12, b. Penn.
Edward " , age 10, b. Penn.
Mary J. " , age 4, b. Illinois
Obadiah " , age 2, b. Ill.
James McCormack, age 11 months, b. Illinois.
The older sons would be with 1st wife, says they born in Pennsylvania?? Could not locate in Penn. in 1850-1860.
Per family history Hugh and wife moved to Texas late 1870's, but says 3 oldest sons did not move with them. They stayed in Illinois and he never saw them again.
In 1880, Hugh and wife, Mary are in Milam couty Texas. Milam county in N. central Texas south of Waco. Census lists:
Hugh McCormick, age 46, b. Ireland
Mary J., wife, age 38, b. Indiana
Margaret Jane, age 14, b. Illinois
Obidiah age 13, b. Ill.
James age 10, b. Ill.
Alice age 7, b. Ill.
Joseph E. age 5, b. Ill.
Henry O. age 1, b. Texas
Per age of last child, they came to Texas between 1876 and 1878.
They moved from Milam county TX. to Freestone county TX. by 1900. They live in Precinct 5 in 1900. Those listed on census are:
H M C Mccormick, b. 1830 in Ireland. age 70.
Mary, his wife, b. 1842 in Indiana
Joe, a son, b. 1875 in Illinois
Henry, son b. 1878 in Texas
William, son b. 1882 in Texas
Luther, son b. 1885 in Texas.
Still holds they came to Texas 1876 - 1878. This census listed Hugh as H M C McCormick. Do not think his middle initial was M or C. Census taker wrote H MC and then McCormick.
Hugh died in 1908 and wife, Mary died 1911. Both are buried at the Woodland cemetery about 3 miles northwest of present day Kirvin community in Freestone county Texas. Their markers were still there 10 days ago (Mar. 2010)
My line: Margarett Jane McCormick, oldest child of Hugh and 2nd wife, Mary, married John William Murphy Sr. in Belton, Bell county, Texas in 1885. Their 1st child, a daughter, Emma Myrtle Murphy, b. Apr. 1887 in Belton, Bell co. TX. was my Grandmother. She married my Grandfather, Carl Rosco Arnold in Mart, McLennan county Texas in 1905.
If anything rings a bell, if you have looked and came to a dead end at McCormick/McCormack in Illinois email or reply.
As said I find no record of Hugh in Illinois before 1870. The oldest sons are listed on 1870 census born in Pennsylvania. After Hugh leaves Illinois for Texas, I find nothing on these older sons, in Illinois or Texas. Odis.
